Site Needs .243/.243AI Loads & Comments

Re: Site Needs .243/.243AI Loads & Comments

Do Federal 210 Match Primers perform better for this cartridge? It seems that most of the loads listed use F210M's...........

Re: Site Needs .243/.243AI Loads & Comments

THERE JUST MY PREFERENCE...........................

Re: Site Needs .243/.243AI Loads & Comments

.243AI load testing data:

Savage Varmint Action - 28" Criterion 1" bull barrel (w/550 rounds down the tube) reamed out to Ackley Improved

Powder - IMR 4350

Bullet - Hornady 105 A-Max seated aprox .025 off lands.

5 shot strings

41.6 gr - 3051/3058/3058/3065/3079 FPS

42.0 gr - 3065/3079/3102/3100/3108 FPS

42.4 gr - 3112/3122/3137/3128/3115 FPS

42.8 gr - 3144/3137/3144/3144/3150 FPS

43.2 gr - 3152/3167/3167/3162/3182 FPS

I did 2 separate ladder tests @ 265 yards and decided the lowest load and near the highest load showed the best potential so I loaded up 10 rounds @ 41.8 gr and 10 rounds @ 43.0 gr and shot some 5 shot groups @ 225 yards later in the day and the 2, 5 shot groups of 43.0 gr produced right at and just under 1" groups running right around 3150 FPS +/- 10-15 fps.

I wanted a 14 twist but all I could find at time was 12, does anyone else but Shilen offer that twist, in 6mm I am surprised to hear of someone going that route, I thought I was they only one that would spec out a 14 twist 243AI, sorry I can't help you I only have a 12twist, but will watching to see who chimes in, just glad to see there are other slow twist shooters out there, we should have our own forum section,LOL

ruger American rifle honrnady brass fed 210 primers, imr 4320 58 g v-max coal 2.625

This combo using Lee dipper 2.50 has given me grt accuracy. 5/8 or better at 130 yards. it started out as just a test I was amazed at the results I got. dnt have a chrno but according to info I can find should be about 3450-3500fps.grt varmint load.

Re: Site Needs .243/.243AI Loads & Comments

95g nbt ruger american
norma brass
fed 210 primers
hogdons hybrid 100 43gs

Am a new member would like any feed back or ideas I can get

Re: Site Needs .243/.243AI Loads & Comments

Have owned and loaded for many, many standard factory .243's over the years. Most were Rem 700's with a couple of Model 70's, one Sako and a Ruger #1 thrown in for good measure; Most (I assume) were 1 in 10" twist barrels. Without fail, my go-to load has been either a Hornady 87 grain Spire point or a Sierra 85 grain HPBT with a prudent load of H414 or WW760. Devastating on Whitetails and groundhogs alike.

Re: Site Needs .243/.243AI Loads & Comments

Quick question for everyone, I'm not having any luck finding Unique around here to use for COW loads so I'm trying to find an alternative. I've seen blue dot used but yet again I can't find any, however I was looking at burn rate charts and I noticed W231 is very close to Unique and I have some on hand. So has anyone tried using 231 and if so what did you settle on for charge weight. I was thinking of staring at around 5gr and working up till I didn't notice an improvement on forming. I was thinking I would end up somewhere around 9gr, but wanted to bounce the idea off people that have tried this a little more. Thanks for any help.
