7-08 and Varget?

XTR

F-TR obssessed shooting junkie
Anyone ever use Varget with 140s in a 7-08? Lyman doesn't list it. I've used 4350, for 140s and 162s and I know it's the stuff to use for the 162s, but it gets to pretty heavily compressed loads with a 140 and shows no pressures.

Anyone got any good Varget results? (I use WW brass)

My son shoots 140 accubonds and 139 sst in his 7-08 with varget. When I get home I will look at my data.

I shoot the same, very accurate in my Tikka, I believe I use 40 grains of varget but not sure either without looking for sure, I know whatever it is it's not a hot load, it is just really accurate so I left it alone.

I've used it exclusively in the 7mm-08 for 130-140 grain bullets (and even on some 162's).

I shot a 42.5 g load with 130 grain SMK's for awhile and it shot good but not consistently great - but that was before I really started paying attention to brass quality. Currently, I'm shooting Norma brass (skim turned), Fed 210m primers, 140 grain Berger Hunting VLD's and 42.3g Varget. It's about as close to a one-hole rifle as I can make it with that load. I currently have about 3500 rounds through that barrell..........shoots 140 g BT's over Varget pretty well also.

If you go to Hodgdon's website----you will be able to access load data for just about any caliber you desire.(do not know how to post a link for you-sorry)

You just need to copy the URL in the browser you have open, and paste it here: http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp

I don't have a 7mm-08, but my 7X57 is pretty close. Quick Load says the ideal powder for 7X57 is RL-17. I stock both RL-17 for my K-31 and Varget for my 6BRX bench rest gun so I have both.

I'm going to load up an OCW with accubonds and see how it works. This is my hunting rife, I have played with some of the 162s for giggles and I'd read a lot of info from guys who had used the 162s in tactical shooting that to get higher velocities and not pop primers you got better results from H4350. My testing with the 140s is pretty darned to close to fill the case and stuff in the bullet, not quite, but 48gr is a lot if anything to put in a 308 based case. I already buy Varget in fairly large quantities for my F-TR loads to if I can keep the number of powders down that helps.

I'm getting low 2800s from H4350, if I can get similar or better performance with accuracy from Varget w/o pressure then I'll be happy.

I think you will find that RL-17 will yield slightly higher velocities with equal or less pressure than H4350.
Look back in "Accurate Shooter" and you will find an article on RL-17.

I use ww760 in my 7mm-08 and get good accuracy and velocity 2930fps with a140 part. in a Rem. 24" factory barrel. Read an article about 15 years ago about using 760 because of the compressed load issue.

What kind of loads are you guys using for R17 in the 7mm-07? Looking to use it with 162gr A-maxes.

I'm using 49.0 grains of RL17 with a 140 berger hunting VLD . I'd have to look for sure , but it's around 3075 FPS .

As other guys have said already, yes, I use Varget in my 7mm-08.

41.0 grains behind a 140 gr Ballistic Tip. Fantastic shooting load.

Just got back from working up some loads on my son's hunting rifle (Rem 700 SPS youth compact LH in 7mm-08, 20 in barrel) using Varget and Berger 168 gr VLDs. Using once-fired Federal nickel plated brass and CCI #200 primers. The brass was neck sized only with a Lee Collet die since it had only been shot through this rifle. Weather 54 deg F, 23.82 in Hg, elevation: 6,094', wind: 4-8 mph, from 10 o'clock. Here's my data: median MVs (using Labradar) of 2, three shot groups of each load along with group size(s)...

39.2 gr - 2,494 fps - 1.45", 0.93"
39.4 gr - 2,494 fps - 1.08", 0.54"
39.6 gr - 2,526 fps - 0.76", 1.18"
39.8 gr - 2,527 fps - 0.90", 1.12"
40.0 gr - 2,535 fps - 0.78"

As a comparison I shot some factory ammo too (only 1, three shot group)...
HSM 140 gr Berger VLDs: 2,728 fps, 1.60"
Federal 140 gr ?: 2,770 fps, 1.12"

I had hoped my handloads would have shot better. I was alternating between this rifle and my competition 6.5 Creedmoor so I could let the barrel cool off between groups. Also I was consistently shooting well under 1 MOA with my 6.5 so I don't think it was the shooter!

Zombie thread alert...

I moved on from Varget with my 7-08. These days I run 2000MR and 140s. Gives me a comfortable 2900+fps
