AR side charging uppers

Well i was going to order a upper and lower from Sun Devil for a varmint build. After doing a little research it is not going to happen as they do not have the setup on the upper that i am looking for. I have been looking some and found that Mega Machine makes what i am looking for. I know their are other uppers used for these but am not finding them. Could you guys guide to some other people who make the uppers for the side charging handles so i can check out their sites and research them to make a final decision.

I build a ton of RH and LH side charging match and varmint rifles on several brands of uppers. The Mega is the only one that I am aware of that manufacturers with the slot already in it, but a milling machine can make any modification. Check out this link:

I looked at the LAR Grizzly upper and what i like about it is that where the charging handle would be on a normal upper it has been deleted. I like the looks much better and from what i have read it seems like a nice piece. Anyone here heard bad things about them? I would think with these being made from billet and being through the CNC that it would be hard to choose a bad upper from 1 of the companies. I think it just comes down to options and features that you prefer and having a matched upper and lower from the same company if you choose so.

When shooting these with the side charging handle, is the brass being ejected closer to you since their is no deflector on the side of the upper?

I have an LAR OPS-4 upper. Brass discharges well and doesn't hit anything but the wall beside me. i am not sure if it is closer, since this is my only AR. I only have about 100 rounds through it, but so far it has been awsome. Mine is actually a left hand charge, which while it looks a bit weird is pretty functional. I can actually remove the handle and put it on the right side, but prefer it on the left (even though I am right handed). My lower is from UT ARMs (local company to me) and I don't recall the barrel maker, but chambered in 223 wylde. The rifle will shoot less than 1" at 100 yards with just about anything and significantly better (less than 1/2" with handloads). Actually had a 3 round group in the 0.2" range, although, I am not going to say it would routinely do this (it might, but I screw up too often).

Greg, good to hear that you like it and sounds like a very nice build. Did your upper come with a comeplete bolt carrier group or did you buy it seperate?

Quentin Defense are excellent. Plus they retain the ability to use the charging handle. Made not too far from Sun Devil out of 7075. The bolts are Young Mfg.

It's possible they could run you one with a blocked receiver if you didn't want the charging handle feature.

Oh, Young makes one, too, but it's not on his website.

Another happy LAR OPS-4 user. I have it on a White Oak upper. My AR always shoots groups .400 or below witha .260" best.

Just deal direct with Mega Machine. That's who everybody else is outsourcing there side chargers from. Very nice units Young chrome carrier Thick walled receiver. They also have matched lowers. One stop shop. Check it out you ll be glad you did. Lloyd

I looked at the young chrome carriers, but WOW, the price! They sure are proud of those things when they offer no advantage over a GI unit.
I sell the whole unit (Mega receiver and properly modified carrier) done and ready to go for $345.

Quentin Defense makes them in their shop in Gilbert from bar stock. Not Mega Machine. Sun Devil makes them in house, too, but he uses 6061.
