30-284 vs 300WSM

I've a .30 project but .308 is restricted, here in France.

Search for balance between performance and barrel long-lasting (my requirement is at least 4K rounds)

Wait for your inputs regarding to :

barrel life

actual speeds (didn't found datas for 30-284)

expect to shoot 155 to 200gr (mostly Lapua Scenar)
My main rifle is a 6.5x47Lapua, works fine from 0 to 600m, I only want a rifle for hunting Elks and boars but will mainly do paper & steel punching over 500m.

I have a 30-284 on a Rem SA with a Lothar Walther Polygonal barrel 12 twist 26" length. For all practical purposes it's a 30-06 in a SA case. There are some slight differences in prefered powders and charges. But I believe the barrel life should be quite close to the 30-06.( I have only 250-260 rounds thru the barrel so I can't really say for sure). The 300WSM is going to reduce barrel life due to the amount of extra powder being used. If you can find a copy of the # 26 Hodgdon powder manual it lists the 30-284 as the same as the 30-06. I use H-1000 ,Retumbo , VV165, VV170 depending on the bullet being used.

We have an alternative to the 30x284 that is shooting very well at 1000 yd benchrest .. It will suit the components available over your way also The 9.3x62 lapua brass is very good , concentric and real tough.. Kept the same neck length, same AOL and just improved the shoulder at 35*.. Load is 58gns of H4350 for 3050 to 3100fps with a 175 Smk in a 13 twist. Has shot 4 inch groups at 1K..JR..Jeff Rogers..ps alternative is VV165 powder

Thanks guys,

Is the 30-06 also long-lasting as the .308 ?

30-284 please me because of the .473 (same as .308) in a Long action for being able to seat bullets long ...

Could we see a picture of this round?

Hi wildchild , I don't shoot this cartridge ,but will try to get a pic of it for you ..The 30 JAT and 7mm JAT came about 6 years ago when i wanted a mid size LR 7mm ,i drew it up and it sat there as i had moved on from the 7mm thing.. Along came a new guy that wanted some good performance and economy ,three of us got together on the reamer specs to suit the Lapua case exactly(Jeff Alan Tony).. Shoots great ,good barrel life ..You can hit that case to 3100 with a 175 at atleast 5 firings without doing anything else but neck size..JR..Jeff Rogers

Here's a pic of a production 9.3 Lapua case on the left / next the fireformed 30 JAT. then final loaded round.. It's throated short because in using the Sierra 175 Palma SMK they proved to be about the most consistant bullet made that we have tested.. JR..Jeff Rogers ..ps 99 % of the actions suitable for 308 w size will accept this case head dia at .474

I suggested the 30-284 on Snipers Hide. It's comparable to the 7.5x55 Swiss in case dimensions, but not in performance for factory loadings.

The reloading data for the 7.5 Swiss keeps in account the lower capabilities of the forefathers to the K31 rifle. Thus the pressures are lower.

I never thought to take the 9.2x62 and neck it back to 30 cal, but I do recall JPS stating that part of the "military round" criteria is that no former military cartridge can chamber and fire in the rifle.

The 30-9.2x62 might run into issues with stuffing a 30-06 into the chamber, I'm not sure since I've never compared the case prints.

I do know that the hitch point on keeping 7.5 Swiss out of a 30-284 chamber is that the case heads on the 7.5 Swiss are 30 thou larger than the 284, so the bolt can't close on it.

I'm interested to see what he chooses, I think the 300 WSM is going to be harder on barrels than you want, and the brass available for the 284 based case is better by a fair margin unless you enjoy spending hours sorting, trimming, turning, etc all of the Win or RP cases.

Hi bohemR13,

It will be a target/hunting rifle from a R700 LA action or a modern clone + New barrel : it won't be a factory ammo eater as they are no available in 30-284 : I will reload my ammo.

About quality case issue in 30-284, do you think that "open" a 6.5x284Lapua could be an option ?
or should I consider Win/Rem/Fed cases as "consumable" ?

Sorry for the slow reply. I would have no qualms about necking 6.5x284 Lapus brass up to 30 caliber.

Do it it 2 steps and you'll be just fine. Be sure to lube the necks well

Weather you decide on Lapua,Norma,Nosler,or Winchester get the brass you plan on useing, mic it out so when you have your reamer made it's made for that brass .There is a slight difference in 284 Win brass vs the various 6.5x284 cases (at the shoulder/neck area)and the 284 win brass has thicker neck walls,at least the lot I have does.

Curious as to how this cartridge shot for you, accuracy potential, velocity, average grouping, barrel life?

Yes I know this has been taking a nap going on 14 years.

Not a 30-284 chamber, 7.5x55. I have used various brass with no noticeable differences.
It is not a 300WM. The Swiss rifle is a heck of a shooter. A buddy that has passed on built a 30-284 and went over the top of the Swiss loads, it was an outstanding shooter with minimal recoil.

Those that may run across this thread in the future, the dies made by our “smart” US companies will frustrate folks. I have bought numerous dies marked 7.5x55 and even some marked for the K31 and not the Swiss 1911, and it still sizes the hell out of the brass. There were some slight changes between the two. There were those that said it would not work, 30-284 dies fixed my problem

I'm curious as to the barrel length on this. The same powder charge, in a 26 inch standard 30/06, only produced 2850 with the 175's. I would have expected the larger cartridge to produce less velocity with the same charge. WH

3/8" when I first started with it, it's closer to 1/2" now. It's in a Walther "poly" barrel used for hunting. I get 3065 with Hornady 150 Interbonds and 2830 with 180 Swift A-frames

On par with what I currently have in .30.
