Hey guys, Hornady just released a brand NEW 6.5mm Cartridge called the 6.5 Creedmoor. In "secret" development with Dennis DeMille at Creedmoor Sports, the 6.5 Creedmoor is bigger than an 6.5x47 Lapua, but smaller than a .260 Remington,6.5-08). Case Capacity is 53.0 grains of water filled to the top of the case mouth.

BULLETIN REPORT: http://accurateshooter.wordpress.com/2007/11/07/hornady-introduces-new-65-creedmoor-cartridge/

Hornady will start selling factory-loaded ammo in January or February, and expect Hornady-made brass to follow a few months after that. The factory ammo features a NEW 120gr Amax bullet with a claimed .470 BC, plus the present 140gr Amax.

One of the design goals with the new cartridge was total reliability in rapid fire for High Power shooters. The factory loads are held to a "sensible" pressure of just under 60,000 psi. For comparison, the 6.5x47 and 6XC are rated at 63,000+ psi.

Dennis has been testing the round for a year and he reports "no pressure issues such as stiff bolt lift or primer cratering."

This is a direct competitor to Lapua's 6.5x47 and it will be interesting to see which round earns greater acceptance. In addition to High Power applications, we think the new 6.5 Creedmoor will work very well as a tactical and hunting round.

Move over 6.5 XC, 6.5 TSE, 6.5 Super BR, 6.5x47 Lapua. There's a new kid on the block.

I suppose when the 30 T/C came out it was only a matter of time until we saw it necked down to something. I'm sure there are others waiting in the wings.

For guys who want cheap factory brass with SAAMI specs this is it. For better quality brass you can always stick with the Lapua or even the XC.

For those who wildcat it doesn't offer anything new.

But keep them coming Remchester and Nosnady. More cartridges mean more shooters. I'm all for that.:)

Mover over 6.8 military experimental round base on the 30 Reminton case. This may be the ticket for the AR-10 platform. Expect Remington, DPMS and others to pick it up in their new lne of ARs. I also forgot to say Hornaday and Ruger have always been in bed with each other. His would also fit well in the Ruger Mini 30 action well.

Not likely w/ the .473 case head... standard AR-15 bolt starts getting awful thin when you try shoe-horning a .473 case in there.

Agreed.

The AR15 bolthead can go up to .445",PPC size). Anything over that is looking for trouble.

The AR15 magazine limits the COAL to 2.26" max. I've seen a few gunsmith modified magazines that purport to work with a longer COAL, but I've never seen them feed worth a damn. I can't envision a 6.5 Creedmore cartridge loaded this short, even with the lightest bullets.

We'll probably be seeing the Creedmore chambered in the big guns, like the AR10 and SR308. Maybe even the RRA, if they can ever get it together.

Hmmmm. Well, since the .260 already works fine in the AR-10 platforms I'm not seeing where this is really going to take off.

I'm with you, Rust,

If the 6.5 x 47 Lapua is enjoying it's limited success, how much room is there for the 6.5 x 49 Creedmore,at lower pressure) ?

WHATS THE 6.5SUPER BR? IT SOUNDS LIKE SOMTHING I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO COME UP WITH.

Have been considering a re-barrel job on my .308 match rifle to the 6.5x47 - now I dunno which one to go with... Either is likely to shoot better at long range than my .308 Win, and maybe even better on the rapid fire stages too...

Who knows? Maybe best to wait a bit and see where the issue sits after the dust settles a mite. My .308 barrel is still in good shape anyway!

Regards, Guy

In overall accuracy I still think the Lapua will be easier load, small primers and Lapua consistency.

Remingtons 260 could have really taken off but they dropped the ball like a pork chop eating fat boy. If you offer a high performance round then load it that way.
I don't think Hornady will make the same mistake as Remington did, they are already offering 120 and 140 Amax loads.

This 6.5 round has the potential to do good things in an Ar-10 platform. I currently have a custom bolt with Berger 120's and can push it to 3,100fps in a X55 case. I will be looking to purchase a platform system when it is perfected. :D Overbore

I have read all of the details, and the really nice article on this website which compares the 6.5 Creedmoore, the 6.5x47 and the 260. That article pretty well sums up my feelings. The 260 will work better with the bigger bullets, the 6.5 Crematory will work fine either across the course or for long range but will be limited if the brass is too soft, the 6.5x47 is perfect for either XC or for long range and has the small rifle primer and the harder Lapua factory brass.

Unfortunately Gary Elesio doesn't make his R5 repeater for the 6.5x47 yet or that is what I would have ordered for my XC gun.

I will be watching the scores and the shooters to see which wins out as an overall winner.

By the way, that article written about all 3 of the 6.5 rounds is here: http://demigodllc.com/articles/6.5-shootout-260-6.5x47-6.5-creedmoor/

Seems to me to be a .243AI necked up to 6.5. Internal capacity is roughly the same. Should be an accurate combo, depending on which bullet used.

Gary.

I reload all of my ammo and I use a Wilson case trimmer for oal case trimming. Just thought I would let the 6.5CM reloaders know that the caseholder for the 6.5CM is the "22-250 ACKLEY" and it will work for new or fired cases.

Thanks for the link to the article. That answers a lot of questions. The net to me seems to be that the .260 is just as good a cartridge. Too bad Hornandy didn't just start making better ammmo for it, but everybody wants to prove how clever they are by "innovating".

The 6.5 Grendal is still the more interesting cartridge, sadly not covered in the article. Interesting because it works in a standard AR-15 platform, not the AR-10. And interesting because it is gentle enough to use in full-auto in an AR sized gun. Sadly the 6.5 Grendal seems to be loosing out the the lesser 6.8 SPC.

At the high end, in bolt guns, I'm not sure why one would not go all the way up to the .264 WinMag, or at least the 6.5/06.

.223 Actions: 6.5 Grendal
.308 Actions: .260 Rem
long Actions: .264 WinMag

So i'm look around and I see that the David Tubb 6XC has an oal case length of 1.90 with a 30 deg sholder. The brass is 6 points harder than the Lapua 6.5 x 47 brass which makes it superior to the lapua. Why couln't I just run the 6XC brass through my resizer and up size the neck and I have 6.5 creedmoor brass as good or better than lapua. I might give this a try. What do you think?

quote from dr0 "At the high end, in bolt guns, I'm not sure why one would not go all the way up to the .264 WinMag, or at least the 6.5/06."
the main reason is because the 6.5X284 already has that covered with short enough barrel life. Treeman

If the creedmoor is 1.92 case length with .370 neck length, that puts the neck to shoulder region at 1.55.
1.55 on a 308 base cartridge is where the shoulder to body starts.
So what is the length for the creedmoor at the shoulder to body region?
is it 1.4xxx or less?
I know what the diagram says for the 6 x 47 or 6.5 x 47 and the creedmoor is longer than it is but shorter than the 308 style case.
My other question would be wouldn't necking up a 243 not work because of the length is to long at the shoulder to body intersection point on the 243 or other 308 base case?
