6.5x47 HV gun?

Evan I run an 8tw @ 30" .293 neck .145 fb , yes yes I know this is to short , but guess what ? you might want to stock up on rl 16 , this will let you keep your hair. also you will need a long drop tube with a very slow pour . hope this helps . dave edit : At your elev. in co an 8.5 should work great also.
What are your loads with RL16? I just picked up a couple of pounds after my 6.5 Staball failure. I'm running 123gr and 139gr Scenars in my 6.5x47 with a 30 inch barrel.

Any thoughts or consensus on barrel length and size? I tend to favor barrels with a straight taper of some sort. This is unverified, but I feel like they shoot more consistently than a straight tube or hunting type curved taper. I was thinking a 30" long, straight taper to 1.1" at the muzzle or so. Seems that there is a rising preference for 28" with the 6mm; is that true for 6.5mm too? I'm hoping that this rifle will weigh in just under the 17# light gun limit, allowing me to shoot both classes. Since I carve my own stocks, I have a bit of control over the final weight.

If youre going for 17# and using a wood stock youll be 28” give or take. The HV taper is the most popular

Well, some exciting news! I bit the bullet and called up Jim Borden this morning. He's building me a DLC coated Rimrock BRL drop port, ~29" Krieger Heavy Varmint contour, 4 groove, 1:8 twist with his 6.5x47 reamer (0.293 neck and 0.170 freebore). Now I just need to sit tight for a few months...

So to change tracks a little, do bushing dies cause bad donut problems with the 6.5x47? Jim's freebore of 0.170 seems a touch on the short side for 140s, so bearing length may be in the donut region.

Also, how much tension does the 6.5 usually like? My 22BR and my 20 Vartarg prefer minimal: barely over 0.001" and so I'm think about ordering a honed Forester FL at 0.2885 to get started with. Thoughts?

I would wait and get a bushing die from Harrell's. Send couple fired cases to them. I don't think I have gotten donuts. Can't beat the price and fit IMHO.

I would wait and just get a bushing die from Harrell's. Send couple fired cases to them. I don't think I have gotten donuts. Can't beat the price and fit IMHO.
Are you saying to buy an off the shelf bushing die, like a Redding S?

I was planning to send brass off to Harrells, or Whidden if I feel like splashing cash on a click-die, but I'll need something to get started.

6.5x47 is king. I’ve shot 6mm br for the last year and I hate them. Too weak in the wind. 6.5 stays centered up much easier in common wind. Barrel life is great. Very easy to tune. I shot our range record at 600 last year with one. .691 5 shot.
Details please

My favorite cartridge of all time

With any luck my new gun will be capable of that, and with some talent (or perhaps just luck) on my side, perhaps I'll be able to show it!

I've got a pile of 147s from my 6.5 creedmoor RPR that I'll do a little playing with, but I'm hoping the 144 Hybrid shoots well in it for competition.

I don't often build two custom rifles chambered for the same cartridge, but when i do they are 6.5x47L's Because i don't "Needmoor"

The barreled action is sitting in purgatory while my background check goes through. Here's where the stock was a couple days ago:

Some tweaking to the shape is still needed. This one is an all new shape for me. The minute the gunshop say my check went through, I run down and get the barreled action and bed it in. This will be my first glue in. I'll post up progress as it happens. I'm very hopeful I can shoot it this weekend!

28” @ 2900 FPS with 130 Berger hybrids
I just built another one with a shorter 24” barrel and have been extremely impressed in 300 and 400 yard matches with it. Won a few score and groups with it.
