I’ve looked and the thread is kind of scattered. So to help speed things up figured I would ask for a bullet weight specific powder. Built this rifle around the 215 hybrid for a lr trainer beyond my dasher range for better splash feedback at longer range. I have everything on hand but my powder. Which powder such as h1000, h4350, etc would give the best velocity and accuracy.

Re23 gives me good velocity and results on paper in my long range F-open barrel.

215’s at 2930fps in a 30” barrel, I start seeing pressure at around 3000fps with this powder. 2213SC showed pressure at around 2900fps

I have a 32" barrel as do 3 of my friends. ALL 4 rifles are shooting 215s and all use RL-23 and all are between 64.0 and 64.7grs. All are shooting somewhere between 2885 and 2905. There has GOT to be something to RL-23 and the .300 WSM / 215's.. NOTE: these are all 32" barrels..

H-4831 (regular) and SSC are another decent option. - Keep in mind lot to lot variations for this powder as well as other powders. - I have a 32" 5R Krieger 1.450 straight cyl. in a barrel-block (1000 yd. HG) that has shot well with 66.7 gr. (H-4831 ssc) and the 215 gr Berger Hyb. (Norma Brass & Fed 210M)
    - Another consideration is the throat length as what works well in one gun may be on the "warm-side" in another rifle.

RL 17 - I am currently running one with 208 grain bullets at 3023fps with a 28" barrel and the gun will shoot in the 0-1's at 100 yards.

I use H 4350 with all of my 300 WSM tubes.....and don't plan on changing any time soon!! I am not worried about every last FPS....The extra 100 FPS at the muzzle equates to what.....50- 60 FPS on target at LR. I have yet to see a target, compeditor, or spectator be impressed by 50 FPS. But they are with 3 - 5 inch groups at 1K. ;)

yes must be something going on there

Mine runs 64.0r with the 215 and shoots very well.

Mine is around 2930fps but has a shortish FB and is only 30”

Next tube will be 32” and have a tuner for sure.

Well, that's true but I did win the only 1000 yard paper match I took it too last year. I don't necessarily care about the speed that is where it shot the best.

May have to give them a shot using 210’s getting an average es of 10, switched to 215’s first few shots where 1.5es. Need to shoot more to get a broader average on the 215’s. Both gm.

Ben, have you burned any 300 barrels yet? i got one barrel that is shooting lights out at close to 1250 rounds, and the throat has only eroded about 12 thousands.

No Sir! Still on my first 2 barrels. My .300 throated for the 215s has exactly 1180 rounds and it is STILL shooting a very flat vertical. I don't know at what point the barrel will start falling off. Presently, I am saving the barrel for the end of this month when we shoot the Arizona State Long-Range Championship. My barrel throated for the 200-20Xs is at 830 rounds and has just now started with mild firecracking. I expect that one, based on my borescope and throat erosion should get at or above 2000 rounds. Time will tell Gilbert! But I am T-Totally sold on the .300 WSM as the premier F-Open round.

RE-23 temp stable or any adjusting of loads throughout the year as temps rise and fall?

Any Vihtavouri powders that work well with the .300 short monster? @Laurie what do your guys favor on your side of the pond in this chambering?

That's a good question Monte - and I don't have a good answer! @Elwood may know as he's much closer to national league F-Open shooters than I am these days, having retired from national level competition.

I suspect Viht N165, but can't state that as a fact. (The many 284 and variants shooters here who used H4831sc have mostly switched to this powder since the ADI manufactured Hodgdon brand extruded grades were banned under EU health & safety rules last year.)

We don't actually have many 300WSM users in F-Class - the 7mm/300 variant is the norm at national level with some use in club shooting too. That may change in future years as the 300 version's best known Brit user is Gary Costello (@GLC) who has just taken our GB F-Class league championship after an outstanding season's shooting with 79 out of a possible 80 points (best four results of the eight championship rounds). However, Gary uses sevens too and won't have won all his points with the 300.

As to Re23 which has been mentioned in other posts, I don't know if we have it here yet. I've ordered some as a possible 4831 replacement but have yet to see any turn up. We've recently started seeing Re16 which was introduced around the same time, (maybe a little earlier ?).

Oh, a late thought. N165 appears to have joined the list of Viht's reformulated 'temperature stable' grades judging by its new labelling. (See the list of product attributes at the top right of the N150 and 165 labels on lots just arrived in-country from Finland two or three weeks ago.)
