Who loves their 300 RUM!

So for my next gun it’s going to be a barrel burner and 300 rum is my front runner currently although 27 or 28 Nosler has my interest as well.

The RUM has a reputation for carbon build up but I’ve read enough about products like JB paste and Witches Brew and how to use them that I feel confident in being able to keep things clean.

So who loves their Rum? Is it your number one hunting rig and why?

I’m curious to know.

I have a 300 RUM improved (300 Tomahawk) what is there not to like, a 240 SMK running 2900fps and extremely accurate. I can get 3000 fps but accuracy falls off too much for my liking.

Con, signs of pressure before you reach case capacity. Recoil is not pleasant, get a brake.

They flat out shoot. Using a 200 grain AccuBond with RL 25 at 3050 to 3100 FPS. Sight in 2.75" at a 100 yards and hold top of deers back at 500 yards for a dead deer. Have kill deer out to 625 yards. My number 1 hunting rifle for long range shots. Bullets will not come apart even at close range. Great bullets in thick brush.

New to the forum, but I love my 300 rum. It is not the most practical hunting rig (23 pounds) but I am able to drive the 180 warner flat lines at 3450 with sub moa accuracy to 1500 yards. 37B9C4D8-51E9-4469-A262-8B0A54CC09D5.jpeg

I have a very accurate RUM. It has a 26" Pac-Nor 10 twist barrel. It shoots a 200gr Accubond at 3225. It uses 96.0grs of Retumbo.
Eeek. 70 rounds per pound of powder.... That's a lot of feeding!

Out of curiosity, does it give you enough extra speed over a 300 WSM to justify the increased appetite?

The ONLY thing it MAY do is slightly extend the distance of your shot(s) on game. With today's excellent bullets (and I am NOT a fan of long-range Big Game hunting) just about any magnum will cleanly kill game well past what I BELIEVE game should shot at. We all have our opinions on that subject>>> but power alone should NEVER be the determining factor on how far a kill on a majestic animal should be attempted at! I shoot F-Open out to 1000 yards. T-rust me, in my opinion, under IDEAL and I do mean IDEAL conditions, 500 yards should be max! Just MY 2 cents..

Don't own one but I'd say the answer is yes. I would think around 300 fps more velocity than the WSM with the same bullet. I'm running well over 100 grains of powder in my Lapua improved and the extra speed is necessary when reaching out at ELR with heavy bullets. Out to 1000 or 1500 not necessarily but behind 1500 or 2000, it's huge.

Wow! You're up there. My goto load was 94.0 grs at 3150. Bought a new jug and started blowing primers. Had to reduce to 90 grs at 3100 to be safe.

I was thinking the same. Only thing I could think was 34"+ barrel but he said 26". That's definitely smoking. Brass life ???

Thanks for the replies guys.

I like velocity for hunting rifles even on non ELR shots. The flat trajectory just makes things easier especially when steep angles are involved.

I’m thinking 180 accubonds around 3300 FPS sounds good. Should be good for pronghorn to elk and everything in between.

I could probably do better than .5 moa but barrel life is NOT an attribute of 300rum. So as soon as I reached half MOA I stopped load development.
