Zermatt RimX build

I ordered a left hand RimX action in 17 WSM to be delivered in January '24. I have an MDT chassis plus a takeoff Remington factory plastic stock for the gun. I ordered a Triggertech trigger with bottom safety so that I can use it with either stock. I have a Lothar Walther 18" stainless barrel on the way. Next I'll need bottom metal for the factory stock and will probably get one from Hawkins. My goal is to have a powerful left hand repeater in rimfire so as to comply with Tennessee's prohibition against using centerfire guns on small game. As the Rimx has interchangeable bolt heads, I could also make it a switch barrel gun with one of the other rimfire calibers. The chassis will have a free float barrel and I will do the same with the factory stock. I have made these parts selections based upon internet searching only, but there are so many conflicting opinions out there. I could have selected another action but Zermatt is the only one offering a left hand repeater in 17 WSM.

I built a 22LR bench gun on a RimX action (20 moa rail) last summer. Our club holds 100 yd matches monthly (4 targets, 10-shots each, 1" 10-ring, 1/2" X-ring). I put a Shilen "ratchet" (B0 taper) on mine and finished it at 26", used a Jewel trigger set at 2 oz. in a KRG Bravo chassis, with a Harrel's tuner. I topped it with a Sightron SIII 45X45 ED in Warne lever style quick-detach rings. I did all of the work myself (first rimfire barrel I ever chambered). It is truly an amazing rifle! One downside is the price of the magazines, at $125/ea. - but they are things of beauty, made from sold blocks of aluminum, they also are "height" adjustable so they feed perfectly.

This rifle holds the club record to date with 398-26X (shooting CX) and I have no doubt with a better wind reader for a shooter, it would shoot clean consistently. You will love it!

I should be receiving my Rimx build from Johnathan with Modacam Rifles in the next week or so. I shipped my action along with a TT Diamond trigger for him to install. Barrel is a (finished) Krieger 23" MTU that Modacam chambered. I will be dropping this into a KRG Whiskey 3 chassis and will top it off with either a NF 7-35x56 ATACR or a NF 15x55-52 Comp scope that I have sitting on the shelf. I recently picked up a 26" SS Proof Research threaded prefit from a friend for $400.00 that is NIB. (I have a SilencerCo Switchback in jail that I am waiting on and this will just be a toy to screw around with having some fun shooting. Counting the days...

I have a Lothar Walther 17HMR barrel on mine. I shot these targets the other day I a hurry. I was just trying to get some basic come ups for shooting P-dogs. I shot from a Bog Pod using only two legs as I never got out of my side by side. Like I said just trying to get approximate come ups. I was so impressed that I really need to shoot it off a bipod. I had an 6-8mph wind. I shot from 100 back to 175yards. Oh the come ups turned out to be .2 mils per 25 yards back to 175, I bet they will get bigger past 175.

This was 4 shots on 4” steel at 175. The rifle has Lothar Walther barrel, Trigger Tech Flat Primary trigger, KRG Bravo chassis. Same set up and day as the above post. I have laid waste to 400 plus prairie dogs with it on a local ranch. A rancher saw the results on the small town and had me lay waste to the ones in front of his house. Lol

Love my RimX, it's hard not to when set up properly. Here's a couple things I found as I worked on mine.
Mag extensions, I like these if you don't want to pay for the factory ones https://jklprecision.com/product-category/rimx/
If you get Hawkins M5 bottom metal, DON'T get the center paddle mag release, get the one like this if it fits your build. I made that mistake and it was a nightmare for matches because it's so small and hard to access. The bigger outside paddle style is better.

FWIW I've had way better performance with my RimX in a chassis than a stock with bottom metal if it's aftermarket. The magazine alignment needs to be damn near perfect to feed correctly and if the bottom metal isn't fit properly you'll do nothing but cuss at it every once in a while (and always at the worst time) because it didn't feed correctly or you got one ahead of the bolt (and because it's a CRF you can't rescue that round without a cleaning rod or a sharp blade). As me how I know...

F class john ,
I’ve read and am having feeding / failure to feed issues with a acc chassis , have rifle tore down currently , I think it is the for and aft clearance on the mag need to shim the front also having some failure to fire , don’t know what is going on doesn't seem to be the trigger sear dragging still checking

Yeah I've seen people (and I've used) everything from stickers of Velcro to correct that in my wood stock and have seen people with Vudoo's have the same issue and use the same corrective method. Those full size mags and a tiny round can be a finicky combo for sure. I'll say my RimX hasn't needed any correction so far in an MPA BA or an MDT Oryx. I use feeler gages to set the adjustable piece on the magazines so they're all the same in terms of how they lock in. I'm sure there's other tricks and experiences but that's mine so far.

It could be that after loading the mag the tip pf the bullet is tipped downward ever so slightly and the round gets hung up on the feed ramp. It only happens to me on the first round of a fully loaded magazine. I check to make sure this hasn't occurred after loading and have no problems since. I just pull back on the top case rim and it tilts it upward.

What barrel are you running?? In regards to your feeding issues, if your mag height is properly adjusted, then it could be a chamfer/radius or lack there of issue on your chamber mouth or chamber polish issue.

I have 1 of the first 5 RimX's that left Zermatt and I've tested going on 30+ barrels and over 13,000rd through it. In the early days we determined, by the design of the RimX thst a a slight chamfer or radius was needed on the chamber mouth to aid in feeding as well as a high chamber polish...

I also experienced FTF issues with mag extensions... so I dont run them.. I have 4 10rd mags. Just not enough spring pressure with those mag extensions and the oem springs I found. They work, but weren't 100% reliable so I took mine off.

In regards to your failure to fires... what trigger are you running?? TT by chance?

Hey padom
The failure to feed are usually the last in the mag
The failure to fire are random , Xtsp trigger two stage

Try pulling the mag spring out and stretching it out some and then see if you still have the last round feed issue.. If that doesn't fix it then the cause is the mag height adjustment. Sounds like its close but not optimal.

FTF is going to be a trigger issue. The Zermatt actions (TL3, SR3, RimX) sit about 0.015 lower than most other cocking pieces. This is why the Bix N Andy trigger with the LOW sear is the optimal trigger setup for RimX. I know Zermatt has a new cocking piece they will send you for a TriggerTech trigger. I have no knowledge or experience with the XTSP trigger but Ill assume that sear height to cocking piece measurement is the issue as we've seen this in other triggers.

Ray mailed me a new cocking piece , I need to take the rest apart and measure to see if I can figure out if that is it or not , I read where littlepod did that onSH
