Curt, I'm just starting out in F-Class. I have read many of post in what makes a good rifle, but I'm still learning.
I built my rifle on a benchrest action, a Bat 3 lug. I chose the Right bolt Right port because when laying prone, and I'm right handed) you don't have to break your position to load, as you would with R/L configuration.
I chose Bat, mainly because they were available. You can buy one off the shelf. They are built to very tight tolerances compared to even most of the customs, from what I understand. Which may not be so good, if your getting sand, dust or water in it.
Barrel, I went with the Broughton 5C. I chose this because the numerous reports of higher velocities and less fouling. This choice I believe was a good one, the barrel shoots unbelievably.
Stock, I hadn't made up my mind and was going with a laminate. Until I read a post on this website, I seen a picture of a Robertson Composite GBF. This stock is designed for F-Open. I like it, it has unique styling. It has this large extended pistol grip that to some looks odd and I suppose could actually bump your rear bag if your not careful. The stock fore-end rides on the edges and has a recessed middle, where I had a rail installed for other reasons than F-Class.
Trigger, I went with a jewell HVR its set at 1lb. Can go lighter if necessary.
Cartridge, This is where I went against the flow. I went with a wildcat. I know this isn't very wise, but I just had to have a 6 Dasher. Case forming is time consuming and teadious. But I am happy with my choice, because I don't shoot alot of matches. The 6 Dasher allowed me to shoot a 149-9x at 1000 yards, at only my second match.
If I was to start going to huge matches where alot of ammo is necessary, I would consider rechambering to a non wildcat, perhaps a 260 Rem. I know I can't afford to shoot a 6.5-284 even though its the cats meow at 1000 yards.
Scope, I may or may not change out my optics for more power. Right now I am using 8.5-25x50.
Since this picture I have learned to turn my rear bag the right direction..LOL.. And I have bought a Fire-Control joystick rest.,thanks HABU) and the difference is night and day. I couldn't go back to a wheel-knob rest now..
