Your thought about the Anschutz model 64 MP R for 22 benchrest competition.

I want to get back into 22LR benchrest shooting and I was thinking about buying a new Anschutz Model 64 MPR for competition shooting. What do all of you think about this choice. I know the rifle is being discontinued, but it seems to have everything a growing boy would need? Thoughts?

Are you going to compete in local club matches, or sanctioned ARA/ABRA matches? The MPR does not qualify/meet the requirements for the new ARA factory class, just FYI. The MPR will be in the Outlaw Heavy Barrel class in ABRA.

You'll still need to find the preferred ammo, have a good scope/rest/wind flags/routine, etc., etc., to be competitive. I have a MPR and am competitive in ABRA but the other shooters need to have a few more brain farts than I do to win a match. I can/have won some targets but no matches yet. I participate for the fun and fellowship with the people, others are a lot more serious about it and chase the points/rankings.

Not sure what you mean by benchrest shooting? if you mean just fooling around shooting off a bench or you competed in the past. if it is the latter, you know the answer to your question.
though you can make one competitive, when you are done you would have been better off looking for a used custom RFBR rifle. in the long run, the money not spent trying to get the MPR to a competitive level would better put to finding ammo.

I just want to shoot some local matches. I have no intention of going for points or trying to become nations best. Just want to be competitive at some local matches. That was my intention of finding the best ammo for the rifle. I have already ordered a whole set of different 22lr ammo from Lapua Eley, CCI, and other good stuff. Not cheap but this should be fun. I already have an excellent NightForce scope for this adventure. I am too old to try to set the world on fire, just spend some time doing what I like to do during my retirement! ( My wife told me "Find something to do already!") And the reason for the Anschutz MPR - it is just a great looking rifle and should shoot great p!

I would want to know what you would be shooting against. Don't want to take a knife to a gunfight so to speak. Check out what everyone else is using.

it's not gonna work well free recoil

get a t-rail mounted 3" front bag rider and hold it hard and you'll have fun and be respectable

sunday in smallbore f-class i shot 298 with my 54 and br stock and 299 with my 64 mpr!

Thanks for your great input. I will need all of the help I can get. It sounds like it is considerably different that shooting long range high power. I usually shoot a 6.5 x 47 Lapua - all Kelbly built. Fantastic shooter, if I don't screw it up!

How are the guys shooting their deer rifles doing in your high power matches? You'll be in that boat with your MPR. I would set a budget and get the most bang for your $$$ if you care at all about being competitive.

I think the budget will be less than long range high power, even with buying Lapua bullets at $15.00 a box!

You might start taking rimfire shooting more serious and fun. Look for a clean used custom setup for the sport.

Spent the jingle on a full house Kelbly.... The 64 is a nice rifle but if you are accustomed to real top of the line the 2nd tier rifle is not going to be enough. I personally think you will end up regretting buying anything but top of the line.

I would rate the Rem 40X, Win 52D, Annie 54, etc. as the 2nd tier. Annie 64 is 3rd tier.
