What are your Recommendations for REM .222 Barrel Length and Twist? I plan on using 50 to 55 grain bullets for 200 yard target practice and Varmint Benchrest shooting. Please explain your answers.
Thanks

The old BR shooters used the 14 twist with their 52 grain bullets. About 20-22"barrel length.

Emulate the 223 twist rates to bring the 222 into modern times.

When a .223 does this (below) in a registered BR tournament, maybe.

14tw man. No other choice. Dont get caught up in the “twist rate wars”

Its hard to imagine they measured that hole so big. Calipers must have slipped

I shot one for many years with a simple 12x fixed power scope. This was the days when things were simple. The 222 is a great caliber and varmint hunting round. Shot tons of groundhogs, crows and foxes. Out to 200 yards it has no peer. Cases last a long time, its economical and its very easy to reload.

I would recommend a standard 14" twist with a 24" long, number 3 contour barrel. 14" twist since you want to shoot 50 to 55 grain bullets which I personally believe is the way to go for varmint hunting especially the 50's in this caliber. I know heavy bullets are in vogue now a days but why mess around with having to dial of elevation corrections or messy recticles. Keep it simple. If you need a long range varmint rifle (i.e. over 250 yards) go to the 22 250 or 243.

The 24" length barrel is a good compromise on length to give you the extra velocity but yet still be manageable in the field. The number 3 contour barrel will add some stiffness to the barrel and weight to aid is shooting although my factory Rem sporter Model 700 was a 1/2 moa rifle until I shot the barrel out.

Suggested powder: IMR 4198, Primer: Rem 7 1/2, Bullet: 50 Sierra Blitz. Varmints don't have a chance against this combo if you do your part.;)

I have a 14 twist tight neck chambered .222 Remington bench rifle. All things considered, I might put a 13 1/2 twist on it if I rebarreled it, but that is just me. 22" is a good barrel length. My barrel has a HV contour. LV would have been fine, and might have helped balance a bit for a 10.5# limit rifle. Given the life potential of barrels with that chambering, I would have also cut the barrel with a short shank. My rifle's action is a tuned up 722 that among other things has had its bolt sleeved. What makes the rifle a little less typical is that it is a glue in, in a early prototype McMillan stock made by Kelly himself. He gave me the option of pillars or the glue job and I chose the latter. The rifle shoots better than it did with the old stock and pillars, having produced some five shot groups in the ones under ideal conditions, using loads tuned at the range and shooting over flags.

You say "Varmint Bench rest shooting." So, how far will your targets be ? If you range limit is 200 Yds (+-) then the above suggestions of a 1-14, with a 20 to 22" tube and52 th 55 gn bullets.
