Your favorite .224 caliber hotrod?

Okay,
We all know we can make them go fast Now, can we find one that will not only go fast but be accurate at 1000 yds.

In the last 50 years that I have been shooting 22's in one flavor or another I have not seen any that can be as accurate at 1000 yds as some of the small 6 mm's, like the BR. Now, don't get me wrong , I love the 22's and with all the improvements in bullets and powder they still don't seem to hold up at longer ranges. I know there are a few people that have gone out of their way to work with the 22 to set some personal goal but which one to do it everyday when asked too.

Seems like if we get barrel twists down to where they will handle heavier bullets we can't get bullets to stay together to reach the targets.

Anyone shooting any of the 90 gr bullets in one of the hotrods? What kind of results are you getting. I don't think we need the big 284 case to do this. I believe that a case size of about the 22-250 AI ,220 Swift or 22x47L has all the capacity needed to do this.

Anyone else with thoughts along this line? Open it up folks and get some ideas out in the open Got to be a better way then burning 60 gr of powder for 3500 fps.

Carolina + all -

Shooting the aforementioned .22-35Rem wildcat, in example:

From a 28" 1-8 .224" cal barrel, 40.5gr AA3100 and FED LR Magnum Match put 3,500fps on a 75"A"-Max. 90s would take more oomph.

IMHO -
If 3,500fps is desired shooting .224" cal 90s from a not ridiculously long barrel, the case will probably need to be larger in capacity than 50gr H2O. Expansion ratio would run around 7.5 from a 28", better than 7.5 for 29" barrel length; using a notional 50gr H2O capacity .224" cal case.

For a shorter 26" barrel example, to propel a .250" cal 100gr bullet to 3,500fps would require an expansion ratio of 5.5 .
From a 26" barrel, a 6mm could propel an 85gr to 3,500fps; from a set-up running w/ an expansion ratio of around 6.4 .

Typical Expansion Ratios ( Homer Powley " Powley Papers " 1974 Guns & Ammo Annual ):
Cartridge 20in 24in 28in
.22 Weatherby Rocket 4.5 5.3 6.1
.220 Swift 4.8 5.6 6.5
.22-250 5.2 6.1 7.0
.257 Roberts 5.7 6.7 7.7
.250-3000 6.7 7.9 9.1

For barrel life reasons, an expansion ratio zone of 6.5 - 7.7 is do-able w/ select .224" cal, 6mm, and/or .25" cal cartridges; w/ higher values holding even better promise. It's gonna take the longer barrels to generate the desired vel, w/o having to resort to a hugely over-bore chambering to do it.

For a pure anti-groundhog application, I would wonder about potential for " shoot through "; when shooting .224" cal 80s -90s ?
I myself only had one shoot through when shooting 75"A"-Max in the .22-35 from the 28" 1-8.

I like to use 450ft lb as a lower threshold guide, when reviewing energy deliverable on a groundhog @ distance.
Good as the 28" .22-35 was @ efficiently propelling 75s; a 29" barrel would have been even better; and still fit an " Airglide " .
The example .22-35 w/ a 29" 1-8 would be pretty close on delivering 450ft lb @ 1,000.
For a lot of Midwest shooters, wind might not be as big a factor as it is for some more Western shooters; where the 80s & 90s might find more favor.

Morning Kevin,
The 3500 fps was just an arbitrary figure to be used as an example. Not many 6mm will do 3500 either. Especially with 105 gr bullets.

The goal here is an accurate 22 cal round that will put 10 rds in a 5 in. group at 1000 yds. Which one?

In 1981 I was shooting a 224 Clark with 80 gr bullets made by Hornady for Clark. It would not meet todays accuracy needs. Maybe because of the bullets used or the old powders. We used a lot of Norma 205 when we could get it.

It's not just a velocity race as much as an accuracy goal. With the 1000 yd target being the goal. Whether it's paper, ground hogs or PD's.

Need a lot more work on this.

George,

Seems to me that James Phillips did pretty well with the .22 Dasher and, I believe, the 80gr. Sierra bullet.....

Phil.

That's true Phil but he was shooting 600 yds not 1000 and I don't think he is shooting the 22's anymore. Now that James is back to shooting I believe he is shooting some kind of 6mm. Maybe he'll weigh-in on this.

CarolinaMan -

No argument from me, as regards the need for accuracy.

I did not chrono my .22-35 wildcat, until after I had been shooting it 20+ yr. And when I did ( w/ a friend's chrono ), I did not change the load; or step-away from the load after seeing the readings.
I had biased accuracy first, and useul vel second. And I still do today.

Next time up to the farm, I'll get the spotting scope video rollin' & air the .22-243AI out on steel @ 1K. With a full head of steam, that little 75 Amax sure gets there in a hurry!

22-250 with an 8" twist 80 grain bergers...

I did have a 22x55. Bunch of leftover Swede brass and a screwed up reamer that we reground to work on a 224 barrel that needed to be setback anyway. 55 grain bullets at 4000 fps was fun while it lasted.

22/6mm TTH here also. 75amax at 3860 with 51.5 gr retumbo and no pressure. Have 3 loads on some brass so far. Will hold 2" at 500 meters
25" shilen select savage long action

Fredo,

I think you know what I like...22PPC and a Swift. Not total hotrods, but they perform and the chucks don't complain

22-6MM Ackley Improved. 51.0 gr RL 22 80 gr SMK and Fed 210 M. 3800 fps but hot load. 30 " Krieger 8 twist. Have shot groundhogs out to 1100 yards. Have shot 4.1" 3 shot groups at 1200 yards.

I had a 22/6mm Ackley and 22/250 Ackley. I really enjoyed the 22/250 Ack, but unfortunately both got sold to fund a trip to Africa, which was well worth it ;D

I am running a 22x47 lapua with a 90 grain vld. 24" Bartlein 1-7, defiance deviant, mcmillan A3 adj, zeiss hensoldt 4-16, and a lane magnum 9" titanium suppressor.
Velocity 3150. Accuracy is excellent out to 1350 yards, the farthest I have shot it on my range. I will be using this at a precision rifle match in south Dakota in the 10th of October "my 6x47 isn't finished yet". The ballistics are on par with the 6x47 in regards to bc, .547 105 hybrid, .551 90 grain vld. I can push the 90 grain 100 fps faster than I can the 105. This rifle was built for coyote hunting, and is doing a fine job, minimal damage and excellent accuracy. I can run the 90 up to 3200, but it seemed to like the milder 3150 load better, sd is 9 fps. 36.7 grains of H4350 is the load I am using.

BAT Man,

What are your steps for forming from 6.5 to .22?????

What dies are you using???

Phil.
