Gentlemen, I present... the ".220 REDLINE"

The 243 necked down to 224 has been done since the beginning of time...well since Winchester brought it out in 243 ...same for the 6mm Remington necked down and both Ackley improved...Sierra had loading data for 22- 6mm Ackley 20 yrs ago in their manual, faster twist for long bullets of the time...really old, 224 Middlestadt was one of the old ones, along with 224 cheetah Jim Carmichael...nothing new.
RPM, some hold together at 400,000 rpm some don't.
17 Rem 4900 fps 9 twist 15.5 all copper no problem 392,000 rpm 58 gr Vmax 4100 fps 7 .5 393,600 rpm twist no problem.
The 3 twist in the 8.6 Blackout is a problem...285 eld don't make it to 50 yds at 1450 fps, 348000 rpm, failed...disappointed in that big heavy target bullet. It must have a thin jacket. A few leads bullets will make 50 yds at 1600 fps inching up to 400,000 rpm The 225gr interlock will blow up inside tbe muzzle brake, as soon as it leaves the confines of the 3 twist barrel, at 2100 fps, 504,000 rpm.
All copper bullet appears to be required much above 1200 fps for certain arrival to the target...will try them soon, to see if they can handle 504,000 rpm. This is a subsonic only or slightly above caliber for most lead bullets.
3 twist, never heard of such a thing - I’ll have to read up.

Yep the 8.6 Blackout is standard with a 3 twist...they (Faxon) actually tried a 1 twist, before settling on the 3 twist. Bolt or auto it's under license to be made with a 3 twist only, according to Faxon ...I asked if I could buy 8 twist they said No, it's only manufactured in 3 twist. I also have an ar 5.56 with a 6 twist...& 6.5 twist 224, someone made 5.56 in a 5 twist tested on Mr Gunsandgear, it performed normally in his test. So barrels have been manufactured in 1 twist and tested but not released generally to the public...but they have the tooling, and the process...although I believe the process and /or tooling to not quite "there" yet, from what I observed, with a bore scope.

Never knew. Thank you!

I hear from him now and then. Last update I saw was on coyotestuff.com.

We do text back and forth and i can attest that he is well and is still shooting the Redlines. We have not hunted togather in two years due to conflicting schedules. I hope to see him this summer in NY.I was promised a side by side field shoot of the 240 vs the 220.

I definitely miss Fredo and his posts, glad he is doing well.
This thread is proof that old threads are just as valuable as new ones and are definitely appreciated.
Thinking Fredo should come back with some type of wildcat built for the new .257 heavyweight bullets. JMHO

Matt

Just have him build a 1:7" twist 257 Banshee on a 3-groove Lilja barrel about 30" long and just hammer the new Sierra/BJ 131gr bullets.

I know he built a 6mm Redline. He has been tied up in other pursuits, and I accuse him of trying to relive his summer when he was 12. I hope to get to see him this summer in the groundhog fields. He did take a few yotes and a fine buck. I don't think he will return to AS, sadly. He is a good man.

Howdy !

Nice to hear from you, again !

Do you think you and Fredo could gather enough data, pics, and other info to support your making another great post…. this time; on the “ 6mm Redline “ ?

The “ .220 Redline “ series of posts from you 2, were ( for my varmint shooting interest )
THE best rifles / varmint shooting writings I’ve ever read !! Could not get enough, and I have been impatiently waiting for “ 6mm Redline “ posts from you guys.

Whaddaya say ?

Had a great text conversation with Fredo this morning. He sends his regards so that likely means to not expect him back here. The 240 project turned out well, but he said the 220 is still better "pound for pound". We need people like him to push the limits, whether we agree or not. Kinda like the 7mm Backcountry....

I think his nickname should be something like "Roy Weatherby", velocity does amazing things. God bless, Sir.

The guy that let me shoot my first shot at 1000yds told me, "You only have two friends in long range shooting speed and BC."

I know he was abused by some here, no reason to leave he just needs to learn to use the ignore feature. With a press of the button they are gone.
It was deeper than that, but he has elected to go play elsewhere. That's the cool thing about voluntary associations I guess. But I do miss his public input as well. I consider his a friend, though our paths seldom cross anymore due to my relocation to PA from NY
