Your experiance on 65gr a 75 gr vmax (243)

As some of you know I'm having difficulty choosing my homeloads ..

I'm fairly new to it and just want a simple but good round to carry on with foxing .

I'm all ready using the remaining 75 gr superformance factory ammo I have which is brilliant .

My reason on starting to reload once I've used up my remaining factory ammo is that they are very hard to get hold of around my area .

As stated in a different thread I'm shooting inch high at 100 and point a shoot bang on 200 yards which there for that's my max ill despatch foxes ..

I've not got a chronograph , I've got the 9th edition hornady reloading book and noticed the velocities are quite low compared to the factory i have and a bit worried that the 75 gr reload in the book won't do what the factory does velocity wise ..

The 65 gr vmax in the book has a maximum velocity of 3600 , I'd be quite happy between the velocity of 3400-3500 .

I know both pills would do the job , 75 having the better advantages with winds and more expansion damage .

I'd like to just go with the charges from boom rather than spending a lot just on a chronograph to use once ..

I'd be more than happy to go with the 65 vmax but would love to stay with 75 lol ..

What are your experience with the both ??
Good , bad ?

Velocity , ranges , drop etc

Preferably I'd like to know what results you've had at 200 yards with them ...

Apologies for asking too much

Cheers again for your advice, help Etc.

Either bullet at those velocities will all but cut a fox in half!!! I have to ask, are you after fur or one to mount or do you just want them dead and destroyed??? I never use expanding bullets on fox or coyotes...they are not hard to kill. I always try to save the fur. I prefer matchking bullets for fox or coyotes. They are more accurate and do not expand and blow the animal up. I also find that they can be a little more accurate when you slow them down a little.

Destroy as we have hundreds of hens Etc. So damaging the fur ain't an issue .

I'd like my home load to be virtually point a shoot up to 200 yards .

Hence the reason I'm after knowing what velocity would be best suited to that range without having to get technical holding over and dialing in Etc.

I'd love to stay with 75 but the max velocity in book is 3400 with n160 which a lot of people recommended 140 as it's a faster burn but inky a max velocity of 3300 .

65 gr in the book I'd have more choices with speed .

Cheers

Varget can get you to 3600+ in a .243 IF........ your rifle can handle it, and it`s accurate.

You will be around 41-42 grains of powder.....ALWAYS REMEMBER TO START LOW AND WORK YOUR WAY UP!!!!!!!!!

No horror stories about i spent the night in the hospital and my gun blew up in my face, or worse.......

If you really want fast and flat shooting for foxes shoot the 55 Nosler or the 58 Vmax plenty of energy for a fox.

I'd go for varget straight away but have no chronograph and don't really want to buy one to use once .

Please don`t take this the wrong way.............

Reloading can be dangerous, i`m still asking questions and learning new things all the time, it takes time, money and patients to get it done correctly.

If the Hornady ammo is working well for you, my suggestion is to get your hands on some more if it, and start to get your reloading components and tools / equipment together so you can accomplish your goals successfully and SAFELY........

Look around in the classifieds and find some deals on some equipment that you want / need and you will save yourself some cash.

Reloading isn`t an overnight get this, this and this, because it works for someone else, and viola the load to beat all other loads is there..

Good luck with your decision and your foxing.

I allready have all the reloading tools . Have had them for awhile.now . Staying with the same factory ammo is a major issue hence the reason I'm gonna be reloading as it's hard to get hold of around my area .

Then your already half way there, is there anyone you could borrow a chronograph from????

Check the 6PPC section of this site, there is a .243 55r. bullet load thread there, it might be some good reading for you.

Phil.

I could possibly get hold of one . Not too sure .

You're over thinking this. Work up an accurate load with either of those bullets(or any other for that matter) and go kill foxes. You don't "need" a chronograph, at typical .243 Win velocity anything to 200 yards is point and shoot.

There is .2 (tenths) inch difference @ 200 yds (your MAX stated range)between 3400 fps and 3600 fps muzzle velocities with a 75 gr bullet (.330 + or - B.C.). Find the powder/primer/bullet combo that gives the best accuracy and not worry too much about speed ,you'll have more than enough energy to devastate a fox even at much lower velocities with the 243 Win..
