Clearmont, WY, with my son and a rancher/guide some 20+ years ago we camped on a creek bed, the early am worked our way up the edge of a ravine at daybreak a number mulie does and young came out of a field upthe ravene -- we spotted a reasonable buck with a smaller buck and 2 does crossing another ridge out of sight,
Paul, the guide moved us up and around to a vantage point expecting the deer to come out on a plat, they did, but the big one was staying in the rough scrubs, we sat on the lip of the ridge watching to see if he would exit where i could get a shot,
he did, at a full run going up the opposite ridge, as he approached the upper 1/3 a little below our elevation the guide said if he clears the ridge he is off my property, - he and i estimated the distance at 600
i sat down, elbows on knees, 1st shot kicked dust about a food to the right and mid body level, so i held off and ahead correcting and #2 hit him in the back mid shoulder as he was at a full run up hill.
distance worked out to be 625, full run, across a valley,
300wm, 26" Hart, 165 Sierra SBT behind 76gr of imr 4831, 3x9 leup
got the horns at home.
