Have a 40X. .308 Repeater used in NRA/CMP XTC and prone matches. Purchased used. Unknown round count but the gun does shoot well. Very well for the type of shooting I use it for. Sling shooter. Usually open sights.
Regardless...
The Remington barreled action had/has been GLASS bedded in the area of the recoil lug, a bit forward of the lug and maybe an inch aft. Appears that the GLASS bedding....has some time on it. Not a real PRETTY job.
I've set the action screws to a torque of 25"...... No particular reason why other than what I've seen for torque values here... wood stock with GLASS bedding. Perhaps it should be more??? The bottom ALUMINUM metal is NOT bedded.
Anyways.... With the rifle in my cleaning stand (horizontal), I clamped a dial indicator onto the barrel just forward of the fore tip of the stock. I placed the probe on the fore stock. When I loosened the FORWARD action screw.... 1/4 turn...., I got .003" deflection. I tightened the screw and the indicator went back to .000". I then did the same to the rear screw.... NO deflection when loosened 1/4 turn. Tightened both screws to 25".
Thoughts?
As I mentioned the rifle shoots well ( its not a B/R gun) . Maybe 1ish MOA at 200 yards when I used my "best" B/R skills and have my Lyman 15x scope on it and the loads I use in matches.
