XP-100 Tuning

Anyone have any tips on how to accurize an original xp in 221 fireball? Mine strings shots vertically.

Before I rebarrel, I did notice that the forend is not putting pressure on the barrel but it's touching in some places and not others.
Did your friend try free floating his barrel completely?

He tried several things but I think this is a common problem from what I have read . He was a benchrest shooter and he was getting groups like you .

I tried free floating it made it worst. What worked in my old fireball was removing all contact and then putting upward pressure on the last two inches of the fore end. Also seating bullets as close to the lands as possible helps. Keep it original! Mine is a 1963 original.

If it has the original plastic stock, I would start there. You can purchase a good stock from Ernie. Bed it and then give it another try. Ernie's the man when it comes to the XP's.

I would also check the stock first. The plastic stocks are notorious in cracking or splitting right down the middle of the stock where they get bonded when first made. this causes all types of accuracy problems.

Also, if you're using a rear bag (I hope so) make sure it's the flat type of bag, and don't let the butt slam into it.

Another type that works well for me is the Gamechanger schmedium size. With some fill removed, you can rest the butt in the center and the side of your hand on the ear. It's super stable.

Just like anything else. With bigger cartridges a brake becomes necessary to mitigate recoil.

Rifle scopes will work with a heavy barrel, a heavy rear grip stock, and a muzzle brake.

My 284win doesnt agree with you. Its just over 5#. Leupold 3-9x33 on it at the time. It does have a brake. Isn't a heavy barrel or a rear grip.

With a Center-Grip 221 Fireball you can easily use a rifle scope, even if you don't have a muzzle brake.
The recoil is such that it is not a problem (Small case and Light bullets).
You may want to back off a tad more just to see how far it comes back on you.

I have a LOT of center-grip XP-100's, and I think all of them have rifle scopes on them, with the exception of handful of them...
A Remington Custom Shop, center-grip 35 Remington Shot XP-100 (It does not have any scope on it, as I am selling it) and a full blown custom center-grip 7mm BR, which I am selling as well. It has a pistol scope on it. If, I were to keep it, it would have a rifle scope on it, even though it does not have a brake on it.
My Remington Custom Shop, center-grip 223 Remington XP-100 doesn't have a brake, but has a rifle scope on it-Moving this one as well.

Most of my center-grip XP's do have brakes on them, but these don't.
center-grips: 20 Vartarg (no brake-Rifle Scope). 250 Savage (no brake-Rifle Scope).

These center-grips all have muzzle brakes and rifle scopes: 20 BR , 223 Rem, 223AI, 22GT, 22 Creed, 6BR, 6 Dasher, 6GT, 6XC, 6 Creed, 6-284, 25 Creed, 25-284, 25 PRC, 6.5 Creed, 6.5-284, 6.5 PRC, 26 Nosler, 284 Winchester, 280AI, 7mm SAUM, 7mm Dakota, 308 Winchester, 300 SAUM. I might have left out some.
