XP-100 Action

I am working on building a 6BR and have ordered a barrel and have an XP-100 Single Shot action. I spent about $400 on the action and didn't realize that to really true it properly I can look to spend another $5-600. So the question is if I do true this action is what I have really only equal at best to a custom Remington clone. I realize there is the resale issue but that does'nt concern me. I just want not to have made a stupid mistake. I would have to be obvious that this is the first gun I've built so I could call it a learning experience, but if I am really going down the wrong path I'd rather stop and consider a change in direction. So $900-$1k for the XP-100 or same money on a custom. Remeber considering mechanical merits only - not resale.

Go the custom action!!

The tolerances are machined into it when its made not after the fact.
A trued Remington is still a Remington you cannot change that!

Think about when the gun is finished and you look
at it, new match barrel, new stock, new trigger,
new scope and mounts and then your think,
I should have went with the custom action.

I have been where you are and I chose the custom action!!

Why?

To save money!!
I just knew if I had the Remington action I would
not have been happy and I would have had to buy a custom
action in the end anyway.

Resale is something you should think of, never say never!!
You will get your money back on a custom action, you will
NEVER get it back on a trued Rem.

Just my thoughts.

John, I'd sell your XP action, you shouldn't have any difficulty getting 400.00 to 500.00 for it if its complete with the trigger assembly, there's always someone out there looking to build a custom long bull barreled pistol. You can buy a Stiller Predator for what you'd have in the XP. Or better yet a Viper and you'll save in the long run and end up with a true custom rifle. I know because I own three blue printed 700's and one blue printed XP100 action. They all shoot great but I'd be lucky to get fifty cents on the dollar back out of them. I know without a doubt that what I'd do with my 700's, but I'm saving my XP a long range pistol build.

Haveing done what you are contemplating, do youself a favor. Sell the XP and buy the custom action. Would be easy to sell that action to someone that shoots IHMSA or longrange pistol. Then use the money that is earmarked for the trueing job and buy a good custom action. Just the feel of working the bolt will make you smile.

I wish I could get a clear opinion:)

In seriousness I appreciate the advice and I'm comfortable that it is the most sound. Thank you again.

What's the consensus on these questions?

What action if I only want a single shot?

What twist? I really don't expect to shoot anything over 90gr. If I had to focus on a specific weight it would probably be 75-87 although I'd love to be able to shoot lighter sometimes. I'm thinking a 10 twist would be right - possibly 12.

No way should it cost you that kind of money to tweak a XP-100 action.
The complete blue print job on the bolt and action should not be over $250.00..
I have quite a few of them and never regretted it...
I also have a few custom actions,BAT's),Lawton) that I like well enough, but sure wouldn't sell any of my tweaked XP actions to buy another one..
My 18 inch 6br XP pistol will shoot just as good as my 28 inch 6br on a BAT SV will out to 350 yards....
If you decide to go the custom route, the BAT action is as good as its going to get, pricy but well worth crying over it........
A 8 twist barrel will do what you need to do also
If you plan on keeping it, over ever selling it, the XP-100 will do all you need to do.

I agree with everyone on going with a custom if possible...BAT's are what I like. I also agree with Preacher that a blueprint job shouldn't cost that much. Even with the addition of a Kiff bolt to replace the original, between $250 and $300 is a better estimate. Reaming the raceway will add considerably to a blueprint job, but I feel that its completely unnecessary. A Kiff bolt that fits the raceway with little clearance as is, will get the job done.

Pierce makes a single shot.
Try this on:
Receiver $250
Kiff bolt with firing pin assembly and handle and extractor and ejector kit $200.
Tig weld and time bolt handle $50
Blueprint receiver correctly $200
Anschutz bolt release[optional] $100 installed
Fluted bolt[optional[ $45
3 pos safety[optional] $100 installed
I'm doing this on a 600 now knowing that I screwed up.
Buy a custom!

If you decide to go the custom route I'd be interested in the XP action

Me to specially if it's only worth $400.00 to $500.00...
Any one priced them on Gun Broker lately ?
More like upwards of $700.00..........

Most of the XP-100 actions I've seen, and two that I've had built into rifles) shoot very well and are quite "true" with little or no work. While we can spend a lot of time, money and effort to make anything "perfect" let's consider the application. For anything short of competitive Benchrest shooting, checking the face of the action for squareness, lapping the lugs and making sure the threads are reasonably true to the centerline will produce a very good rifle and no regrets. There are also sleeves for the XP-100 which can add a bit of pizzaz and bedding area; it's already a pretty rigid action so it doesn't need the sleeve for stiffening.

The last factor to consider is the manufacturer's viability and future parts availability. Frankly, there's always going to be Remington parts. I have 7 custom actions from makers who are no longer in business or importing to the US. It's not a warm and fuzzy feeling... Having said that, I don't think that BAT, Stiller, Borden or Stolle are in any danger of fading away.

Thanks again too all for taking the time to consider my situation. I am going to use the XP-100. Seems as though it is not your average factory action. I'm sure to have some more decisions to discuss later but for now I feel comfortable using what I have - especially given the fact that this is the first gun I've put together and the first 6BR as well.

Thank you again.
