Wyman & Ted Nugent

Was going through some transparencies and came across this one I shot of Ted Nugent during a bow hunt for mule deer in west Texas some 30 years ago. Ted, Gary Sitton and I were on the trip together but I was not hunting. I had my camera and asked Ted to give me his “bow hunting draw.”
I recall so well first meeting Ted before a concert in Amarillo when he was touring with a group I believe was named, “Damned Yankees.”
My friend, Gary Sitton from Abilene, Texas, was good friends with Ted and had invited me to go back stage while Ted was getting ready for his performance. I had my camera and at the time was shooting some black and white film. As Ted turned to go on stage he turned to one of his people and said, “I want this guy up front to shoot this performance!” I stuttered and said, “ but I didn’t come here to shoot photos!” Ted replied, “let’s see how good you are!” LOL!! Since that time Ted considers us, “Blood Brothers,” a title I wear with pride.
Since that time I consider Ted a friend although have not seen him in years. Those were the days…

Stranglehold is one of the greatest guitar songs ever recorded and performed. Hands down more radio play than Hendrix ever got. Ted was a monster guitar player.

Because of his political leanings he gets zero respect from the industry.

He was also an incredible athlete. He could jump down 10 feet with his guitar on and never bend his knees when he hit the ground.

I met him once at a local archery shop in pa he stopped in before a concert in a limo he came up out of the sun roof with his bow and made a 70 yard shot into the the bullseye like it was nothing that was back in early 1990.

I've been to 4 or 5 of his concerts. Met him backstage once. A gracious and very opinionated man. I like his style.

I've been listening to him since the Amboy Dukes albums -- which were incredibly good in a different way. Those old albums show off Nugent's skill and creativity without much of the flamboyant factor. He is and always was The Bomb, and "Stranglehold" was one of those rock masterpieces. He's kind of like Trump in that a full dose of him is almost too much. jd

He was signing autographs at a BEA show long ago. My young nephew went to get an autograph. Ted spent several minutes talking with him. My nephew does not remember, but I remember and he has my respect.

I met Ted years ago in a gas station corner store just outside Devine, Texas. I was coming out of the field, and he was going in.
We chatted for 20 min in store, before we parted way. I was headed back when i realized who it was. One hell of a great guy. I would love to cross paths again

Glad I saw him live, Blackfoot opened up for him.Was a great show! Love his respect for Fred Bear and the fact that he is drug free, not many rock and roll stars can say that.

Another reason the industry hated him. Total advocate against drugs and alcohol. Imagine that. A group of people so wicked and corrupt they would hate someone that promoted clean living.

If you are a fan of Nugents guitar playing, do yourself a favor and listen to this.

Saw Ted somewhere in Santa Monica as a young marine in 75'. The encore was stranglehold, and the stage was completely dark for the start of the song, and then lit up with him standing on a stack of speakers, then jumping off them to the stage...unlike him, I wasn't sober

I was in Milwaukee Summerfest 1977, saw him on one stage, Cat Stratch Fever and the stage right next to them was Heart, Barracuda

I first saw Terrible Ted in 1979. I have seen him in concert 13 times since. He used to have a booth at the International Sportsman show in Seattle in the early 90’s. I hung out and talked with him for hours. Such a cool, real person. This pic is from the late 90’s at a book signing. Sporting my PD hat…

Awesome experience and great Picture Butch!
I was never really in to his music much
But always did like his politics, what he stood up for and respected him for going into the rock music industry promoting being drug and alcohol free.
I always did like his TV show "Spirit of the Wild" as well,
When he would say something like
"now, the mystical flight of the arrow will penetrate the beautiful protein beast ....etc etc"
I kept thinking (someone like me and my buddies do
.... must have dared him to say that nonsense on TV didnt they, like a buddy joke
thinking no way is he going to say that for real.

Funny story. About 20 years ago I was at an archery trade show in Indianapolis. Ted was there in a purple suit and purple shoes. We were in a target panic seminar. The speaker stated you have more nerve endings in the end of your trigger finger than anywhere else. Ted stood up and loudly exclaimed that was a lie!
Downhill from there!

Met Ted while working at Roush who had built his "Zebra Bronco".Always wanted to talk more about hunting than his Bronco.
His thoughts on a perfect day was get the kids ready for school,practice with the bow in his 40 yard living room. walk out his back door in Jackson MI. and hunt.

Finally some love for Stranglehold! The stations around here run Cat Scratch Fever in the ground...it's ok though. Wango Tango is also on my workout playlist!
