Wyman on looking for a load.

I have been a reloader for 60 years now, preferring to customize my centerfire ammo over exorbitantly expensive factory ammo.
So of late I’ve been spending a tremendous amount of time at the loading bench and on the shooting range experimenting with bullet weights and various powders in an attempt the get that magic combination of both propellant and projectile that jive. One would think that popping in a primer, pouring in a powder and seating just any bullet of a given caliber should work. It’s not that easy. It’s as though primer, powder and bullets have personalities and some just refuse to get along! LOL!!
But after days of experimenting I’ve successfully matched all elements to where they like one another and the beautiful rifle that Butch Lambert of Poetry, Texas created for me is speaking the language I can appreciate. Both barrels, one in 7-08 Ackley Improved and another in 6.5 Creedmoor are as one. Powder, primers and bullets are now compatible and now I can relax a bit before tackling the third barrel in the .308 caliber!
Wishing all a safe and enjoyable weekend!

Butch, what load did he end up with on the Creed?
Right now he is satisfied with .565 3 shot groups. He found it shot best with 40 grains of Winchester 760. He finally seated the bullets just short of touching and he said it helped. He tried 4 different powders. I speced the reamer for the bullet to be able to touch the lands and fit the magazine box. He planned to chronograph today.

I too like the throwback home-made sandbags. Had a pair of myself when I was on a very tight budget in the early days of the 1960's.

However, I would suggest that he not rest the sling under the forearm of the rifle when load testing. It can produce a less than harmonious outcome. ;)
