Most of you know about the 6666 ranch from Yellowstone. Wyman did a book on the ranch before Taylor Sheridan bought it from Mrs Marion.
As I have already alluded to in a previous post, I have been a passive student of archeology and paleontology since my youth. So, several years ago I was hired by the late Anne Marion, then owner of the 6666 ranching empire, to photograph her ranch in Montana.
Anne flew Sylinda and me up to the property on her private jet on two occasions where I spent several days documenting the ranch.
On one day our guide asked if I was interested in seeing a place where ancient people had stored bison meat, it being in a cavern that was impossible to access except by a rope or metal ladder. Of course I immediately expressed to the affirmative so away we went up the mountain with no trail or road to follow, only a mountain top with boulders, grass and some stunted trees.
Soon we arrived at a hole just large enough for a persons body to squeeze through among the rocks. From the cavern came a chilly breeze indicating a large room below that probably maintained a constant temperature pretty well year around.
A thin metal ladder was hooked to the rim of the hole, placed there possibly by archeologists, so down we went. Once my eyes became accustomed to the dark I was amazed at the immense number of bison bones strewn about! Indeed it had been, probably thousands of years before, a literal cold storage for collected bison meat. It was an amazing place but the only spot where I could document the caves content was right beneath the cave opening where a ray of sky light shown down.
Through my travels with a camera I’ve been fortunate to experience so many interesting sites that few people will ever see because no public access is available.
I count myself as a very fortunate man and never do I take this gift for granted.
Wishing for all a great and eventful week!
