Wyatts extended mag box and 6.5 PRC

I just read alf's great write up about his 6.5PRC in a long action. Will the Wyatt's extended magazine box allow for these cases to feed from the magazine without having to adjust the reamer freebore for a shorter OAL? Do the cases feed better out of a long action? I just so happen to have a long 700 sitting on my bench and i think this case is really cool!! Any info would be great!!!

I am not sure I understand your question. A wyatt box in a short action will allow roughly 2.950". That will feed factory ammo fine. It will hinder you with hand loads especially the longer bullets. Wyatt does make a looooong short action mag box for Remington 700s(not clones) that will be fine for most if not all bullets seated to touch lands. These most likely will not work in clones due to the fact that the side bolt release will be near non existent after modified for the extra length. I personally see no real world advantage to the short action. The long action weighs an oz or two more and virtually illuminates any issues you would have. I have built a few short mags on long actions and I can assure you they feed better than short actions. The nay sayers will say why not build a longer cartridge if building a long action and I don't understand that argument. Short cartridges have a lot to offer but I just don't feel most of the larger ones belong trapped by 3.0" limitations.

You answered my question perfectly. I ran a wildcat off a RSAUM case in a long action for a while. I loved the fact that I could seat heavy bullets long but was not sure if the Wyatt box gave the same freedom. Looks like I need a long action magnum bolt to start this adventure. Thanks for the info and have a great week.

I was contemplating the same thing as you and even have a spare long 700 in the safe too. I was looking at both the Wyatt kits, the short action PRC and the short action mid length PRC. After reading all I could find, I was just going to go the long route.

Until.... I remembered that I have a Winchester 70 WSM not being used, the box is about 3.035" so I should be able to use 3.020" or so if needed. I'll have my stock this week to replace the flimsy plastic factory version and I have ordered a barrel and hinged bottom metal so hopefully by the end of May I'll be up and running on the Winny.

David,

On my second 6.5 PRC, I modified the mag box. I found the long action fed better when you loaded the mag in the center of the box. Rounds did not move under recoil, but when working the bolt rearward, the top round had a tendency to slide back. So......

I had an extra magazine block, that is standard on 700 223 mag boxes, and riveted it to the back of the long action mag box, then cut down the follower to fit in the shortened box. Worked perfectly.

Looks great alf. I really like what this carttidge can do with the heavies. Did you mess with Retumbo at all or just run H1000? My 6.5-06 AI will run the 140's at 3100 with great accuracy. If I push it any more I hit pressure with Retumbo.

Never did try Retumbo, as I didn't have any on the shelf.

I did fiddle with R-26, but ultimately settled on H-1000 with the 140 Bergers at 3125 in the 24" tube.

Killed a great buck with it, then sold it.......

I did build a 6 PRC on a 700 short action, and put the Wyatts box kit in that.
A little easier fit with a loaded round of 2.850".

Put the PRC kit in my GRB short action and it feeds RSAUM cases really well. I had to relieve the feed ramp on the action but that was it. It is a really great solution to short Remington boxes if you want to stay with a short action.
