WTF?

I noticed on my .338 Win Mag reloads that I can push the 225 gr Barnes TTSX bullet into the case with my fingers.

These were loaded in new Weatherby (Norma?) head stamped brass and were ran through the fl die to round the necks and size them. They are seated over a max charge of RL17. I loaded them 2-3 years ago.

Any ideas why this is happening?

Some how you are not getting enough sizing (neck tension) on the brass. Going to a F/L bushing die should fix the issue.

How do you know that there was more neck tension when you first loaded them?

That's the first question I'd try to answer.

The second question is to size a piece of fired brass from that brass lot and measure how much difference there is between the OD of the neck on sized brass vs. these loaded brass necks. This will require a micrometer or good dial calipers since you're looking for at least .002" difference, more likely .004-.006 for a big hunting round.

Considering a max charge is compressed and they sat for 3 years, and a bullet with not much of a bearing surface. They have probably been wobbling around in the necks for a that time being pushed by the powder.

I did! I sorted the ones I can’t push in for use tomorrow. I also have a 7 SAUM I can use. Lesson learned……

Yes there is a groove just outside the case mouth.

Brand new never fired cases.
