Iver Johnson makes a nice.38 Super for about $700. Standard 1911A1 configuration. Frames made in Philippines and they make slides and fittings in Florida. Nice solid reliable pistols. I machined slide for one a while back for Novak sights.

I turned one of the cheap $350 RIA 9mms into a poor man’s race gun. It is more fun than a barrel of monkeys.
I also have a similar Tisas set up with a RMR
The Tisas is much more accurate.
9mm ammo is cheap and easy.
