WSM from Rem SA

Does anyone have any experience making a Winchester WSM from a regular Short Action Remington action, i.e. .308/.243? Opening up the bolt face needs to be done of course, but what about the feeding ramp? Does this need modification? Any other problems encountered with the magazine or feeding? Any tips would be helpful.

well if remington uses the same concept as winchester.....i used to own a ultimale shadow model 70 in 7wsm...,built the action into a F-classer) winchester uses the .308 platform barreled and faced in 7wsm ....if you changed the bolt face on a .308 and put a barrel on everything should feed fine...except your mag will only hold 2 down. hope that helps a bit....BUT why not go RSAUM?

Alf, I would go with a Rem action in WSM, but, I'm a lefty and they don't make them in LH. I have to make my own.

I wouldn't have any reason not to go with the SAUM except I have a Model 70 LH rifle in 7mm WSM and have brass, dies etc. So, what I'd really like to do is make a nice long range target rifle out of a 7mm WSM.

My buddy is a retire metal shop teacher. We've made a few rifles but haven't ventured into opening a bolt face or worked with WSMs.

After opening the boilt face you'll need to install a Sako extractor. The feed rails need to be opened up alot. Remington sells a WSM SA mag box and you'll need it. And the right upper corner of the rear bridge needs to be clearanced for extraction.

Sorry, for a lefty, the left upper corner of the rear bridge will need to be clearanced for ejection.

It looks like I'm going to have to do some more research on this before jumping in. SA Box? Never heard of it. I'll look around for some articles on the net and see what I can come up with.....thanks

The rails will need work and you'll need to hunt up a ramp for the different case size.
You can open the bolt face and reinstall a magnum Remington extractor if you don't want to spend the money on the Sako extractor...

hmmm wounder if thats a remington thing? on a model 70 i can swap my box back and forth from my .308 and wsm...they seem the same...box does look big for the WSM though...usually keep my bullets stuffed to the rear and everything works fine

It's starting to seem like I might be able to find a LH Remington "type" WSM action from another vendor with less headaches than converting an actual Rem 700.
