WS2/Danzac

I’ve recently been doing some research on bullet coatings. I’ve never had any experience or interest in them until now so I don’t know much about them. I know moly seems to have more cons than pros, but I don’t see much on WS2. I’ve seen people use HBN on here and other places, but again I don’t hear much on WS2. It seems like it doesn’t have any negatives from what I can find. If anyone could share their opinions on WS2 or their experiences with it I’d really be interested to learn more about this topic. Thanks

For a while in late '90's WS2 was popular among East Coast Score competition. It had a resurgence after first being used around the early '80's. It allowed one to shoot the whole match (~50 to 75 rounds typically) without cleaning. I used it. One had to usually make a subtle adjustment on the powder charge-IIRC you had to increase the charge to reach the same pressure. Don't see many using it these days. Coating the bullets was an extra step in the process.

I shot a lot of WS2 from my 308 FTR rifle.

Did I shoot well with it? Well, yes.
Did it make a difference in my accuracy, barrel life and cleaning? Maybe.

I was at a stage in my FTR career where I got to be a better shooter. I scored well, set one Nat’l Record, won a few matches. So, it’s really difficult for me to say that WS2 was the cats a$$. My rifle seemed to clean a bit easier, but that was before bore scope days, so I couldn’t really see the nasties in the bore, patches were clean, so...?

The important point for WS2 was they really made my bullets look nice and shiny.
Now, I only shoot naked bullets and never shot better.

All in all, if you think it helps and you like shiny bullets, don’t let me or anyone talk you out of them. There are enough superstitions in sports and if you go to shiny bullets and then stop, you never know what might happen.

Like MoS2, WS2 is hygroscopic. I've used all three, eventually winding up using HBN. I can't speak to the buildup and corrosion raps that MoS2 and later, WS2 got as I never let my rifles go that long without cleaning them. Of course HBN, not being hygroscopic, that problem is a thing of the past. I still occasionally mix a little of the MoS2 and WS2 powder in a couple of drops of mineral oil to roll some quick homebrew low friction grease for a project. For the most part, they don't get opened too often anymore. I buy the HBN by the pound and usually split it with one of the guys at work, who puts a teaspoon in their motor oil when they change it. Remember changing your own oil? You can feel the difference in engine responsiveness almost immediately. Like a low weight flywheel FWIW.

Hoot

WS2/Danzac can attract moisture into the bore and hold for rustoleosis to start.

I used WS2/Danzac for high volume shooting - prairie dogs. Does it help with throat erosion, I believe it does. Enough to matter? Maybe - depends on how hot you allow your barrel to get.
