Wrong primer ?

While loading my 6br using 65 gr. bullets & VV135 powder I screwed up while priming. I normally use Fed. 205M in this gun. I primed with CCI 450 & didn't notice till I had them all primed. What kind of big surprise ,if any, am I in for at the match?

May be a little hotter. As long as you weren't close to upper pressure you might be OK. I have seen magnum primers give a half grain increase in velocity. Dont know about the small ones. Matt

I was at the range one day testing and decided to do a small primer test over the chrono (Oehler 35) to see what the speeds were. I loaded up 43 gr Varget under 185 juggernauts in Lapua Palma brass in my FTR rifle (.308) with CCI 450s, Fed 205M, CCI BR4, and Wolf SRM.

The 450s were the hottest primer running 20 ftps faster than Fed 205M. The BR4s were about 10 ftps slower than the Fed 205M. The Wolf primer was bout 5 ftps slower than the BR4.

I'm sure different lots of primers will yield different results but this is what my results were.

Worst case scenario is verticle that's it.

If you are NOT at the VERY top of a load at max, you may find that you may actually get better accuracy!
They were going 3550 with the 205 m. So I think it is pretty close to the max.I guess I'll find out next Saturday at the match.

Ejector marks suck. They off square your base. Pushes case in die from one off center spot. Moot point. Can be scraped off.
And, they screw with headspace.

Mixerman . A different perspective .
I'm reminded that for me . Any doubt or uncertainty , no matter how small , always makes it to the target . If the match is important , then find another option .

If you are uncertain, ask yourself if you think the match director and all the other competitors will feel completely comfortable shooting next to you with this knowledge of your loads? If that answer is "no" for just 1 competitor, I think you know the answer.

If possible test a few rounds prior to next week end. If all's good no worries.

Our sport is not a risk / reward sport. We should always minimize risk where we can control it. Don't mean to sound over bearing but if you aren't certain and think there could be the possibility of an over pressure situation. The only right answer is don't shoot them in a competition with out testing first
