Wood stocks.

I am receiving an early Remington action with the small bolt face and the most beautiful early bluing you’ve ever seen. It would make a wonderful Vartarg if ejection issues could be dealt with or a 222 or 223 Remington Varmit series as the action is a BDL . I would love a stock like the McMillian Marksman at its biggest or the older Remington BDL at the least. Because of the beautiful bluing and condition of the action I would like a nicely figured wood stock .Any suggestions on where to get one without breaking the bank ?

Life is too short to shoot an ugly gun. Spend the money (if you can) and get a nice piece of wood. For me it makes it more enjoyable to shoot.

I agree Walt whole heartedly it’s just that the pockets only are so deep! I’ve always had champagne tastes with a beer budget .

Check Richards Microfit. They have different grades available, The inletting i've got from them has been good. Might have to talk with them but it's a budget build. Right.

They have Marksman style. Makes a good varmint stock.

It takes just as much work to make a stock from a 2x4 as a piece of fancy walnut. My choice is the fancier the better.
I agree. A gunstock is a labor of love. If not for you than the person you buy it from. I buy the nicest wood I can afford (or in most cases, the brightest, most colorful laminate for a BR stock) because I'll spend 60-80 hours turning it into a bedded and finished stock.

To be a bit pedantic though, walnut is hard and dense - a rasp barely scars it. A piece of 2x4 from the lumber yard is so soft you can reduce it to a pile of chips in minutes with the same rasp. But no one should waste their time trying to turn a crummy piece of fast-growth pine into a gunstock.

Richards Microfit is ok if you know what you're going to get. It will show up looking like a beaver chewed it into the rough shape. From there you'll have a ways to go to get to a finished stock. They sell what I can get done in the first 10 hours of a 60 hour stock-making effort.

Your first sentence is what my rifle stocking instructor, John Maxon, said, word for word. Both of you are correct.

Richards microfit has a bunch of grades from economy to exhibition in all sorts of styles. They'll take some work but you can end up with a really nice stock if you're willing to do the work. They have a bargain bin with some good deals.

After talking to him I asked him for $1000 worth in the relative grade and color I liked and he sent me 4 blanks that IMO are worth 30-50% more than what he charged me. It was $1000 plus shipping (175ish?). Got them in less than a week and they are beautiful. I’ll buy from him again and might even splurge on some spendier sticks.

Numerich for 50 or 60 bucks. Not fancy, but generally straight, beautiful, perfectly fitting walnut. You can get standard barrel channel or heavy. This is a 40x rimfire, that came with a few dings and dents but nothing serious. Fits my ADL like a glove.
