Wood stock blank grades/exotics

JRS
What glue do you use to hold everything together ?

Hal
That isn't my handiwork, Hal. I use a couple of custom bowyers. I draw-up what I want, and usually supply the riser material for the build. I'll ask them what they use and let you know.

Some of the exotics can make really interesting stocks. I used to turn pens on a lathe, and learned quickly that most woods won't hold figure down to the thickness a pen is turned to. This was a wood I used quite a bit for pens: https://www.advantagelumber.com/lacewood.htm

I decided to glue up some pieces of it to make a stock a couple years ago. I wanted to contrast the middle piece of it from the outer pieces, so it took awhile to find the right pieces at a local hardwood lumber yard.

Two problems with Lacewood, it can move or warp and is much less hard than English walnut. It will not take a nice checkering. Your stock is nice!

Monty Kennedy had a lot to say about stock blanks in his book on checkering. It turns out that English Walnut is about the best thing out there for weight, looks and strength that will still shape and checker well.

Thanks for the comment Butch. It has a straight barreled 6.5X47L tube (30") attached for almost 3 years now without any tracking problems in the bags. Not sure if the 8 coats of clear helps with that. I never planned on checkering it, and know how careful you have to be with tear-out when working with wood like this.

Cheers

What would you call this one?
