I've been working and traveling so much, I almost forgot what shooting was like.
A kid I've known and mentored for 35 years popped into town for a visit. "Let's go shooting!" he says, so I cleared Thursday's appointments, put the Honey-do list on hold and dusted off the reloading equipment. Really had a hard time finding some things because I couldn't remember where I put them.
Luckily, I'd prepped some brass before I got "too busy" so I had a head start on a couple guns. I also had some new to me guns I wanted to shoot. I checked my favorite website for some info(Thanks, Guys
) and furiously worked into the wee hours putting some loads together. This was good because the kid wanted to move from pistol shooting into more rifle shooting and needed to learn how to reload for his 308. He joined me for a few hours and I ran him thru stripping a bolt," touching the lands", etc., etc. We got an early start on Thursday and set up just as the rain stopped and the sky cleared. We spent the first few hours discussing load development as we tested my new guns and walked him thru the process. Then we got out my old standbys and shot steel for fun. Pretty soon, we were hitting the Ram at 500 fairly consistently and having a ball trying to out shoot each other. We played a game of hitting at 200, 400, 500 as fast as possible using hold overs. I was a little handicapped at that because he was shooting with my Golden Eagle topped 6.5-47 and I was shooting a Sightron topped 223. I managed to hold my own while still letting him win some.
The kid is ex Army and knows how to shoot. The last shots were for group at 500, 5 shots each with the 6.5-47. It was too close to call without a tape measure. Wrapped it up ten minutes before my wife called, asking when the heck I was coming home. All in all, a GREAT day shooting! I'm in love with my new 6xc!
It shows some potential.
