Wolf Small Rifle Magnum Primer hang fires

The original wolf srm primers are the hardest primer to set off. Click-bangs were common with actions that had weaker ignition. I could not use them in a bat I owned at the time, which had the old light spring. You did not mention your action but these primers need to be hit with a good ignition. It doesnt have to be extreme, but some actions do have lighter springs and short fall to enhance feel. Great shooting primers if your action is set up right. I used a lot of them, and still have a decent supply.

The Wolf SRM is my primer of choice in one of my BRA barrels with H4985. It outperformed several others the few times I tested it. I'm using a Panda that this dude ^^ timed for me. It has just a little over .240" pin fall with a Bix trigger. These are the older recipe primers that I don't think are available any longer (thanks Scott). I seat with the 21st Century hand tool.

Using that exact same action, only wearing a 6.5x47 barrel, I did have hang fires using MR2000 and a CCI450. I abandoned that experiment and wrote off that powder as being more difficult to light. Maybe it's not suitable for that much case volume and the small flash hole. IDK?? Varget and H4350 have never given me click-bangs, so I'll stick with them. If anyone wants 8# of MR2000, I'll make you a helluva deal on it!

Another possibility:

Shooting buddy of mine has used the Hornaday hand priming tool for years. He recently loaded up a 100 rounds of 6BR, Lapua brass, CCI450 primers and at the range, and had about a 60% FTF rate. Obviously he stopped before trying all 100.

After much investigation and swapping out parts with new parts on his hand priming tool, we determined that the tool was no longer seating the primers with sufficient crush. For whatever reason, the aluminum body had worn or become deformed preventing optimal seating pressure and the priming piston is non adjustable unless you have the secret tool, a call to Hornaday confirmed this.

In the end and with all new parts. his Hornaday hand primer was delivering properly seated primers with no further FTF issues. His Criterion 28 inch bull barrel was once again printing bug hole groups for him.
