Within 100 Miles of Columbus, WI?

How many of you are within 100 miles of Columbus WI?

What types of shooting events would you attend?

For beginners like myself, I really enjoy the 300 yard only events. My wife likes to shoot also, and 300 yards is a better distance for her. We have been to a couple of 300 yard coyote shoots using NRA coyote targets and really enjoyed them. IMHO anything that helps to make the shoots fun are a plus. The balloon shoot is hard for beginners to get their rifles sighted in at the multiple ranges. I was trying to help myself and two others last year and it was extremely frustrating during the sight in on Friday. Shooting at balloons and not being able to tell where the misses were going was miserable. Targets on sight in day would have been a huge help. I realize that there is nothing you can do about it, but the 300 yards at the Columbus range is less than ideal. Many balloons were behind cattails. Some were, some were not. That makes for an unlevel playing field between competitors. The 600 yard range there is good, so perhaps a 600 yard only fun shoot of some sort would be good? This is not meant to be a criticism, but rather ideas/suggestions that I see as a possible way to draw more beginning shooters.

Hi Terry, I am near Fond du Lac. Many years ago I gave up short range group shooting because of the long drive to attend a match. Back then it was either Cedar Rapids or Minnetonka as the closest ranges. Van Dyne is close but they shoot Hunter class. I didn't have a Hunter class gun and still don't. Recently they have started shooting Varmint for score I guess, so that might become an option. Time is a major problem for any kind of matches for me though.

Thanks for your responce! We are trying to provide an opportunity for people in our area. We literally hacked the 300 yard line out of a willow patch days before the match. This year will have more improvements.

Hi Terry,

My father and I are 40 miles out and we would show up to any High Power or Fullbore match that doesn't coincide with the same at Lodi.

Thanks for asking and supporting competitive shooting in WI.

Best,

There must be more that 3 people who shoot in WI.

Yeah there certainly is! Bigger question is: what kind of shooting do you want to encourage and hold events designed to attract shooters to?

Columbus is what, 20 minutes from Winnequah Gun Club outside Lodi? They have a wide range of activities including indoor smallbore & center-fire pistol. The 1,000 yard high power range is world-class & 1,200 yards is possible under certain circumstances.

No appreciable benchrest activity though that I'm aware of.

After 64+ years of living in Illinois I just last November moved up to Viroqua. Still 2 hours from Lodi, 2-1/2 from Columbus so to get me to make the drive there's gotta be some well-run event scheduled where I know my time will be worthwhile.

Terry, not everybody posts and not everybody reads 6br every day. It would be nice if they did. Hang in there people will come. Research the results and keep an eye on match attendance and just do what they do and people will come.

How about this. It is not a "real match" but it is for fun.

200 yards, prone, different classes, every third Sunday of the month (yes, year round).

And yes Van Dyne does host a Varmint For Score match once every year:
Saturday - September 13, 2014 – VFS – 100/200

I live just west of Madison and shoot Midrange and Longrange Rifle at Lodi. I am a club member at Lodi and am surprised that there are no Tactical type events in the area. I see a lot of club members that have expensive tactical rifles that do not shoot any type of competitions. Some type of event that allows them to shoot against their friends but isn't real serious might be worth looking into.

Just a Thought

Terry, There are many people on here from the area. Several of us shoot F class at Lodi. I would be interested in some of the fun shoots that you have.

I host a shoot this year on April 19 in Durand, WI.

check it out on facebook under the name Hilltop Hilton Prairie Dog Shoot

Ok boys. I will post it up this weekend. It is a prairie dog shoot. With a side match to keep the second relay busy. We grill up some chicken and shoot p.d. targets out to 500 yds. Typing much more on my phone will drive me nuts
