Wish it was my Python problem!!

OK. So, while visiting my brother-in-law last week in Wyoming he shows me something his elderly friend has GIVEN him. Now get this: Two Colt Pythons in .38 Special Target. One blue and one nickel finish. I believe there were only 261 of the nickel finish ever made. Both have the 8" barrels and are unfired. Although I have almost zero love for pistols I have to admit they are beautiful, (can I say that?) Unfortunately the boxes they came in are in very rough shape. His friend is a WW II veteran and is now quite sick. He gave the pistols to my B-I-L in front of his family so there would be no questions. So, where could he get an honest appraisal for them?

Cabela told me about a month ago they would give me $2500.00 for my Colt Python, blued. This pistol is pristine. You can shave yourself using the reflection off the bluing. I've had this pistol since 1965. I then saw another, similar but not as virgin as mine. They had a $3995.00 price tag on it. I didn't sell it. I showed them. And then I gave it to my grandson. Perfect.

i was once told back in the 80's, that if i was to ever come across one of these pistols that you are posting about, ummm to buy it.. so that should tell you they are worth a bunch, esp in the condition that you express! Yeah.. are you keeping them in a bank deposit box? i would!

My personal experience on firearms such as the these is.... If you list them on gunbroker or a bid auction site with atleast two weeks of bid time, you will get far more than you expected. Rarely have firearms that are rare and highly sought after have sold for a low $$$ amount, often times they bring 20-30% more than I thought possible. I've sold quite a few on there. Another option is to consign them with people who know how to get top dollar. If your interested in consigning them send me a PM and I can give you two sources that will get top dollar for your pistols.

At the local gun shop I was shown a python with 6 bullets lodged in the bore !!!

Obviously the owner loaded too light of a load that never made it out the muzzle and just kept shooting.

No damage whatsoever to the pistol. And the bluing was prestine.
I would love to have one for sure.

I'm pretty sure there was only around 500 38 pythons made. Your sitting on a gold mine to the right collector!

For what it's worth, I bought a used Python Target nickel finish with a Leupold EER scope with B-Square mounts in a hard case for $225 at the OGCA gun show in the early 80's. At that time, I strongly disliked nickel finish on handguns. I sold the scope and mounts for more than I paid for everything. I still have the Python.
