Wipeout/patchout

jonbearman

I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
I recently tryed this chemical with and without the excelerator to a very pleasing result. This stuff really takes the crud out of the barrel along with all the copper. The instructions say that the wipeout can stay in the barrel for up to 24 hours. After patching it out I noticed my dewey rod felt like it had a thin coating of it after I wiped it off and it had sort of a sticky feeling to it.I pushed a patch through and it feels the same way. Is this the preservative effect(residue left behind) to protect the barrel or is it abnormal. Now when I use Iosso and I am done cleaning it leaves the barrel smooth as you push the patch through.

jon . . . ,

I use wipeout as well.

After using the product, I spray cleaner in the bore and patch it out. I also run a patch with oil on it, followed by a dry patch.

I know the residue your talking about and IMO it should not be there. I feel confident with my procedure above. I haven't had any issues with my barrels.

Get that crud out of your barrel before shooting!

Be careful to not get it on your skin, too. Especially not wipe it on a sweaty forehead at a match. It's not something that you want to learn by experience.

The best thing is to use nitrile gloves.

On the Wipeout, after I touch any of it, I wash my hands with soap and hot water. It is not that it hurts the skin on my hands, but experience has taught me that there is a residue that will end up irritating the edges of my eyelids if I wipe the perspiration from my face. Whatever causes it to cling to the bore, makes it stay on hands, even if they are wiped off. Every time that I apply it to a bore, or patch it out, I wash my hands. If I do that, there is no problem. On the Patchout with Accelerator, I have had good results slowly cycling an ordinary nylon bore brush up and down the bore a number of times, and then letting it soak for a short time. I take the same precautions that I do with Wipeout. One more thing, a friend ruined a wood stock's finish with Wipeout, so be careful to keep it off of your stock.

Definitely clean your hands after handling any chemicals. I use epoxy clear on my stocks and WipeOut has never hurt the finish in any way. Bore Tech Elimanator hasn't either. I do use both.

Frank,
Of course we all get to use whatever we want, but the reason that I use Wipeout and Patchout is that they work so well that it is worth the little extra trouble of washing my hands. I have not had any stock problems because I keep the combs covered with plastic, have good bore guides, and work with some care. I just mentioned my friend's problem in case someone read this thread that lets the solvent that they are currently using get on their wood stock that does not have a bulletproof finish.

I use Wipeout foam after a patch or two of Accelerator scrubbed a little. 2 to 4 applications will get everything out. Sometimes there's a little carbon left in a really rough bore, but who cares then? I use forceps to take the patch off the jag if it doesn't fall off. I get very little on my hands but wash them well anyhow. I have not had a problem with it in my AR15 or any other rifle. I usually let the foam set for an hour or more. Be sure to angle the muzzle down and put a paper towel under it to catch drips. Buy their applicator and shoot it in from the breach with the tip jammed tightly into the throat. I just bought an 03A3 with heavy copper in it and it was fully clean after four applications of foam. I use Patchout plus Accelerator at the range for convenience.

Re: Wipeout/patchout - Poisonous to Humans???

Well, I wouldn't shave with it (the foam). The label says not to get it on your hands, and if you do, wash it off. I am no more careful with it than with Hoppes and I seem pretty healthy. I leave wet patches out on the bench overnight and the cats won't touch it. Might not want to try that with dogs. They'll eat anything. Smells like some sort of detergent. I would rather use it than an ammonia based cleaner for sure.

That stickiness you feel is the Wipeout still at work! After pushing several patches through the bore, to the point where no more residue shows on the patch, I place a new patch on the jag and aggressively short stroke the bore. This may take
several patches depending on the particular bore. The patches will show black gunk, which I think is carbon hiding in the radius of the riflings. Once this procedure is completed, the bore will be smooth as baby's rear end. Try it.
