Wintertime play in the shop.

I originally put this M-14 JRA group buy receiver together with mixed parts laying around the shop. Now it's time to make things a bit different. Had a Bula suppressor ready 16.5 in barrel and a Winchester bolt installed. Since then I have decided to use one of the Saturn/Liberty SS heavy 22" barrels off the shelf along with one of my USGI SA kits. Cold weather is good for something. Started taking it apart this morning. Whatta Hobby!

I enlisted in the Army in '68. We lugged those heavy SOB's for 8 weeks in Basic, then a month in Jump School, then ten months in Ranger School. By the end of the day they weighed a hundred pounds.
When I got to 'Nam in summer of 69 I was shipped to the Americal. We had a sniper school, lasted six weeks in two three week phases. I had one of these to start with an ART (?) ranging scope, then a Pre-64 M70 in 30-06 with a very nice Unertl. That rifle would shoot better than I could hold it. Lones Wigger was the head of the school.

This one of yours is shaping up nicely. Be sure to let us know how it shoots. Ours had the flipper switch to go full auto, but it was just "Spray & Pray...".

I enlisted in the USMC in 65 and went to boot camp in early 1966 and was issued my first M14. In the Spring of 1966 at ITR in NC we were issued M1s. On to Viet Nam in 1967 and 68 we were issued M14s then they took the real rifles away and issued crap M16s that no one cared for. Whatta Hobby!

now I know where the Army learned that bad habit. The only good '16s were the ones the Ranger Companies got in early 1970; the M203. Had an M-79 (modified grenade launcher) barrel underneath. Talk about bringing Pee... There was even a WP round, and the cannister round held 42 double-ought buck.

This rifle looks pretty nice. Semper Fi!

Still messing with this rifle. Set a Leupold MK4 M1-16x on a Basset mount using Leupold QRW rings. Stuck a TAC-PRO cheek riser on the butt. Really looking forward to some agreeing weather to run her through her function and accuracy tests. Whatta Hobby!

I saw an M14 at the manatee range about 20 years ago that had a box of 300SWM ammo laying next to it. I thought "no way" then the guy that owned it loaded a few in a magazine and put it in the rifle and fired it. Never knew it was possible, but it may not have been practical.

I have had M14s in 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 and .450 Bushmaster. Possibilities for the creative are not all that limited. There was a fellow in Ohio that was stretching the M14 receivers for very long cartridges not all that long ago. Here is a photo of a couple of mine in 6.5 Creedmoor. Whatta Hobby!
