Winter thinking outside the KO2M box.

I see the competitors in KO2M using some pretty stout, hard recoiling cartridges.

I myself couldn't see me shooting these enough to be come proficient, much less doing load development, etc...

So i got to thinking... (A dangerous thing!)

With the new high BC, heavies in 7mm, why not try a 7mm cartridge?
Granted, would have to have some oomph.
Maybe like a 7-378, or the 7.21Firebird.
Maybe not even to those extremes.

Thoughts?

7's have no problem shooting far. The bullets impact is just harder to see. I have a .338 Edge and a 37 XC. Recoil in not a problem. Both are easy to shoot. If you were near me, I'd invite you to shoot them.

Ok, but why?

My reasoning is the same as people going to 6mm for 1,000 yards.

Good BCs and less initial recoil.

Heck, people are hitting at 1 mile with the 6.5 Grendel. Not exactly a speed demon.

Changing wind, and small splash.

6mm is great for 1,000 Benchrest. At 1500+ the wind eats it's lunch. The splash is almost impossible to see in mirage. 6.5 and 7's can have the same problem. If one hit in 20 shots is acceptable do it.

While a 7mm with the newer high BC projectiles is perfectly capable of shooting those distances, and doing it well I might add, the KO2M is shot in an area where there is very little projectile signature/splash.

A 7mm STW beat out all of the big 37 and 40 calibers at an ELR event in Vegas a year or two ago. I believe at that same event, David Tubbs son in law shot very consistently and beat a lot of people with a 33XC.

Apparently because of the venue, KO2M does punish the smaller calibers more with lack of signature. Otherwise, I think there's a lot of merits to shooting a smaller caliber for ELR then the .375 and .408's, etc. Smaller guns with smaller calibers are just plain easier to drive, and don't exploit any weaknesses in your fundamentals as much as the higher recoiling calibers.

The 195 gr. Berger OTM shot out of 28 Noslers at 2000 yards didn't do real well in the match that I saw them shot.

IMO if these smaller cartridges were cut out for ELR (Greater than 1600 yds) then more shooters would be running them. A .338 cal. IMO is about as small as I'd want to be using at 2K and beyond.

There's a reason why those 338's, 375's, 416's get shot at those events.
