Winter calling is getting insane.

My property river is frozen for the most part. At daybreak, I took a day off. Yes, I have a job. I called this alpha female in; she took a 17-hornet at 125 yards in the neck. This shot is one I've perfected for astounding destruction. You see, the jugular is under lots of pressure; a hit just right explodes the neck. Hornady did a great job with their 20-grain V-Max Superformance; nothing escapes with proper shot placement. Squealing downy woodpecker was the call.Look at the tracks on the ice ,that was in one night; there's no shortage here despite a dozen killed this month so far.I've killed coyotes at 250 yards easily with this shot, SHOT PLACEMENT IS WHY.I get annoyed when guys say you can't kill coyotes with a 17 Hornet.

I'm not a yote hunter but neck and head shots can be very difficult at distance. Critters move a lot and that area (head/neck) often moves faster then the center of the animal. Most guys are not taking that shot so that's why the 17 is not preferred but you have a GREAT working load there! Keep on stackin'em!

I understand your logic, but looking at a coyote at 30 power at 250 yards, the head is huge, and the neck,if you know the anatomy , equipment, and practice, the results are positive. How much larger is a yotes ,head and neck, even though these were shot at 100 yards,5 shots.

I don't hunt yotes but I do a fair amount of night hunting with NV on critters and the head and neck almost NEVER present a shot. And i'm well inside 100 yards and still do not take that shot. Now granted, skunks and coons have a much smaller head than a yote but i'd suspect a coon head at 40 yards is proportional to a yote at 250. Too risky, and my rifle and ammo is not a limiting factor. Watching hundreds if not thousands of hours of pred hunting and never seen anyone take head or neck on purpose. I think you'll be in a group of your own on this one! HAHAHA Good shooting! Shoot every last one of those fawn killing bastards!!

Im with ya man, a buddy of mine didn't believe the explosiveness of a .17 until I shot a Cantelope with it
I bet that's what the Coyote's neck looks like when you hit it
Plus necks shot just aids in marksmanship
I got into the habit of head shots at quail with a .22 so I didnt ruin any meat

I'm with you, being in LE. If you want to survive, you'd better know your weapons and how to use them. I practice relentlessly, and as I mentioned, a 30 power scope at 250 yards, one can hit a mouse with enough practice. The hornet is wicked, and so far I've never lost a coyote, as I won't take the shot if I think it's bad.It depends on skill levels and mindset; all have differences in both.

Those coyotes are prolly doin what coyotes do this time of year. ;)
Oh, to be young and in love! :D jd
Yup! I've been seeing them all around town doing their thing in broad daylight. We were going to dinner with my daughter the inter evening and she spotted 3 right down the street from the restaurant. When we came out they were singing all over. And when I say town it's really a city of 66,000 with 130,000 and 55,000 next to it. its that time. of year.
