Wind flags

Looking to purchase some wind flags. Looking at the orlando flags what do you guys think of them.

The ones a friend had I didn't care for. I didn't like their visibility or the clatter the props made. It may have been how he had them balanced but I've never seen a flag go through the motions his did. You might as well had a dancing chicken out there!

What is wrong with Orlando's flags ?
Not that there's anything "wrong" about any flag. There are just Escorts and Cadillacs in most everything.
Remember one thing...any flag can only tell you what has ALREADY happened. Some are much closer to real time than others. Also, a little math...A 10 mph wind is moving across the range at roughly 14.6 feet per second. Benches are usually much closer than that. What good is a flag that takes a full second or even a half second to respond in a switch?

Something that many do not realize but is usually more important than you realize, if you shoot matches or only at a club, if several other guys have good flags then buy the same ones.
As Mike mentioned, you’re flags tell you what just went by, as you shoot you learn to look at the upwind flags as well to see what’s on it’s way. If they’re mostly the same you get a much more valid snapshot of condition, apple's to apples, much harder when you are sifting through 5 kinds of flags.

Well, that depends on the flags. At least that way, no one will have the advantage of a better flag...or the disadvantage of a worse one. :) I guess it would make it more fair for everyone.

Merry Christmas!

a perfect reason to buy different(if better or the same) keep them confused!
The idea of using whatever it is that the majority uses, without regard for improving upon the status quo kills incentive to build a better mousetrap(product). It reminds me of Hitler and the Volkswagen. It's the epitome of socialistic thinking. JMO.

This is a COMPETITION and I'll take an edge where I can find one. With the rest of our equipment, the case could easily be made that it's all very much alike and many of the guns are capable of winning in the right hands. Flags are an area for real improvement and they are super important. Realistically, wind and minimizing mistakes in reading it are what separates the winners from the rest of the pack. Sure, there are other very important factors, like tune, but are any of them more important than good flags? I honestly do NOT think so!

We spend thousands of dollars on the rest of our equipment and I still sometimes see homemade flags on the range. That puzzles me, it really does!

yeah, exactly what universe exists where there is a match with more than 20 guys that all had lousy flags ? now I am aware you are a flag guy but........please.;)

also if you’re paying attention, seems a lot of guys with those crummy old flags are laying down plenty of teen aggs these days.

A lot of them! Yes, I make flags...Does that make anything I said less true...Nope! You are one of a very few(2 or 3) that are on my IGNORE LIST! The only reasons I replied are, yes I make flags..Very good ones.. and that you quoted my post to take a stab at me. That's WHY you're on IGNORE.

p.s...I take it back....You didn't quote my post...You just completely refuted what I said. Quoted or not is irrelevant and you know that.

Did I call anyone's flags "crummy"? Again...Nope! The whole point of my post was that using anything just because that's what everyone else does, for strictly cosmetic reasons, when there may be something better, is counter intuitive to competition..period.

Again...Merry Christmas

this would be great if any of that were factual.
I did not knock anything, from what I gather you make a nice flag.
If I am on your ignore list it is probably because for the longest time you jumped on every rimfire tuner thread on the planet preaching about tuners, except some of the stuff you profess is a little spotty.
Lest we remember, last time something occurred, I believe you posted the nice, classy, question about whether I ever won anything anywhere so kindly, lets not get too preachey, shall we.
There are some pretty valid reasons as well, for why some pretty damn good bench shooter prefer common flags, andI’ve talked to plenty of them including top shooters/ smiths, HOF, and world team members.
What the hell is in the eggnog down there?

Lol! The only thing you just posted that is remotely true and not some vague, non specific bs is that yes, you did win a match or yardage or something. Otherwise, nothing there. If something I profess is "spotty", be specific. If something in my post isn't factual, be specific. Don't just make vague claims without substance to discredit someone, then say something like...well, I've talked to so and so.
To contend that we should all be using lesser equipment because everyone else does, is asinine.

I own several different guys flags & I still use pretty much all of them at times. One set is always in my truck, 2 sets I leave at my home range, & a couple in storage. Mike's are my competition flags.
I fell into the trap that everyone else was using a certain kind & bought a set & used them for years. Until I was at a Nationals & getting my arse handed to me by conditions, or should I say my flags not showing me the condition. It was seemingly dead calm according to the flags I was using. I searched up range at a competitors Ezell flags & it was oh so obvious what I was missing. His showed what little movement there was in both direction & the pinwheel was moving. The only other flag on the range that showed any movement at all were the Aussie flags. I believe this is where Mike's & the Aussies shine, light air.
I bought a set of Mike's & haven't found anything better, or else I'd buy them in a heartbeat. My only wish is that he'd make a slightly larger set for longer yardages. hint, hint :)
Mike's right, it makes no sense to use something, whatever it may be, because thats what the flock does. Use what will give you the best results. It doesn't matter what your buddy's using/building. Competition has no place for this imo.
One other plug for the Ezell flags are they're durable in their construction. Mine have taking a beating toppling over my tripods with heavy gusts. Never had any damage to the pinwheel or flag whatsoever. Time for some stake in poles I guess.
Merry Christmas Mike, Tim, & All
