Wind chart suggestion for Applied Ballistics

Hey Bryan,

Would it be possible for your software to do a 360 degree wind chart like the example bellow. I used it to finish second at the canadian national service rifle last year. As a soldier I find it very usefull to be able to have a fast firing solution anywhere I look in under a second.

It is quite time consuming to create a chart like that wich is why it would be awesome to have something built in where we could change the variables.

Jeff,

Attached is a wind rosette that I made for the Michigan Rifle Team (FTR). It's a little different than yours but IMO it's more intuitive. You find the direction and speed of the wind, then go to the top or bottom for your windage correction.

It would be easy to strip off the data at the top and bottom of this template and write in your own based on your load. Just run a ballistics solver in 2 mph wind increments, write in the corrections at the top, and they're automatically scaled for speed and direction.

I don't have a program that does it all for you, but it's pretty easy to print out the rosette template and write in your numbers at the top for your load and conditions. If you only run one load, you could put the numbers for 1000 yards along the top, and 600 yards on the bottom.

These are pretty easy to make in Excel using the charts. You just plot a line that goes in a circle for each wind speed. The inputs to the chart are the (x,y) locations of the markers. You change the markers to labels and make them the click values for each wind speed at each angle.

You only need to input is the 10 MPH full value wind for the distance. The full value winds at other speeds are calculated form that. The values at each angle are just calculated from the full values using the COS(angle) function.

While it's nice to have everything on one chart, the only time you're firing at more than one distance in a short time at NSCC or CAFSAC is during the rundowns. You could always get a wrist coach like the one from Sunrise Tactical that has multiple windows if you want to carry ones for all distances.

I make them a bit different. I linked a pdf. You can use symmetry to shrink them a bit. I use excel to round intelligently. I set everything up in InDesign. It takes about 1/2 hour to make a new chart, but it took some tinkering. I print these on rite in rain die cut paper. It rains here. BWE is basic wind effect, effect of 1 MPH of full value wind at the distance. SD is spin drift, useful for finding your wind zero. The half circle has the angle cosines written around the perimeter so that if you are inclined, you can compute, or guesstimate, different wind deflections than those shown in the chart.

Bryan, I don't suppose you have the rosette in an editable template and would be willing to share? I could re-create it... but I'm lazy. I could print out the JPG and write in numbers over the top of it...but I'm also anal. :)
