Winchester Silvertip.....exposed.

For my final installment on the WW Silvertip expose, I tore down the round. That heavy crimp fought a good fight but finally gave in. The propellant charge was ball powder as expected weighing 55.8 grains.

I then melted out the core to retrieve the aluminum cap. The remaining cap weight was only 1.0 grain, so it was close to 2.0 grains whole. The wall thickness was .007 best I could measure. It is very fragile and easily deformed.

They still remain "legendary" for whitetail and black bear for me and many other hunters and friends . Like the ones handed down with fine rifles that remain in the family. Faded old boxes sitting right there with Hoppes #9 ...memories of hunting camp hunting in the Adirondacks.

I have been shooting silvertips since the early 50's and have never seen a point with a post in it. They were always the tip covered with the silver cover that extended inside the jacket. Expansion was controlled by the jacket thickness and construction. Those designed for heavy game were very tough and held together.

Thanks for sharing that thought, daleboy. I swear I could smell the campfire smoke when reading it.:)

The dozen or so I have done in the past were with a milling machine. Being five years as a retired machinist with no home machine tools, I rely on flat files and a steady hand.
