Winchester mod 70 woes

My son was gifted a Winchester model 70 chambered in 30.06 for free BUT i think it’s had the wrong cartridge fired in it or a hot hot round fired and bolt is stuck and stock is cracked. The owner passed and his wife gave it to my son. Is it worth fixing ? Mark4 leupold i will remove and depending on what y’all suggest - im willing to put some money into it. Stock cracked bottom metal bent and bolt stuck. I would like to get bolt out just to see what piece of brass is in it ! I’m thinking either wrong cartridge or possibly really hot loaded round ? And to see what the bolt looks like. If i can post more detail pics that would help just let me know what you want to see. Any suggestions a getting bolt out ?

Progress. I can see some brass still in chamber. Ok to try to push out with an old cleaning rod ? Found extractor broken off up in chamber in front of bolt ! And a few chunks of brass !

Used 4198 instead of 4831 , head separation, not trimming brass as the neck grew etc.
But am interested to see what you find

However just from looking at your pics, I'd be willing to bet the chamber has swelled beyond the barrel being useable

The head of the case appears to be stamped 30-(06)?

It looks just like what happened to a friend of mine who shot an 8mm Mauser out of a 30-06, It looks almost identical damage wise, His was a 1917 Enfield, Split the stock down the middle, Blew off the extractor and the ejector box and welded the brass casing into the barrel.

He had it re-barreled and made into a sporter and I'm pretty sure he still has it, That was 15 years ago.

It's not possible to be really sure without removing the barrel, but I would say there is a chance it is OK. The breech lets the case fail and bleed off pressure before any serious damage is done.
So, you need an extractor, an extractor collar, and a stock. The floorplate looks fixable. I'm not certain about the barrel. If the chamber isn't expanded, it's good. WH

Unscrew the barrel and put a new one on. Like said already, extractor/collar & stock. I'd replace the floorplate too and probably the firing pin.

To avoid any more damage and assess any existing damage, you really need to remove the barrel.
The brass case can be removed by heating the brass cast with a small propane torch, then quickly quenching it. It will probably fall out. Take care to heat the case head and not the barrel.

If the lugs and action abutments do not exhibit any setback, and the chamber is not swollen, you can certainly replace the damaged parts and make it a shootable firearm.

A lot depends on how much you are willing to spend.

Bob the brass is stamped 30. But the rest is gone ! Possibly correct cal round but a hot load. I did not know the man very well that owned the rifle but i do know he reloaded some ammo.

Jackie would that require a mold ? Or is it possible to mic from outside - without removing barrel ? Or does it have to be removed ? Way beyond my scope ! But if i can check and replace parts on bolt and return rifle to original then that would be great. I don’t think it’s worth a new barrel and stock just for a mod 70 but i am willing to spend a little on a free rifle and a model 70 is a staple in hunting rifles ! Or in my mind it is - never owned one ! I’m sure open to suggestions

If it did not set the lugs back, there is a good chance the chamber did not swell.
Any competent gunsmith could analyze the parts and ascertain their condition.

You're best bet is to get it to a competent, qualified 'smith and/or machinist (preferably one that's both) for barrel removal and evaluation. It did what it was supposed to do in a high pressure situation....dump the pressure everywhere it could and protect the shooter.

As most everyone else mentioned the next step is to go to a gunsmith and have the barrel removed and the action checked out. If the action is ok it certainly can be rebuilt depending on what he’s willing to spend. The action by itself if it’s ok definitely has value too.

If you could ship it to me, I could certainly do an evaluation of the damage. It would cost you $50 to send it to the FFL I use plus the shipping.
It will involve removing the barrel, extracting that blown case, examining the lug abutments for any set back, doing a die penetrant or magma flux on the bolt lugs, and making sure the chamber didn’t swell.

If everything checks, a check for headspace with a gage would be in order. Of course, you will need a new extractor assembly.

It is basically common sense stuff.
