Winchester Mod.70 stock

I recently bought a Model 70, post 64, chambered in 243 with a heavy barrel. Serial numbers show it to be in the early 70's. I am wanting to replace the wooden stock with something like an H-S or B&C varmint style. My question is, mine has a 2 piece floor plate and considered a long action. I'm told, all winny's were long action until like 1985. Can I replace the stock with something other than a 2 piece floor plate style stock? Stocks for the 2 piece floor plate seem hard to find. Does this make sence to you? Its abit hard for me to explain. Any one have one for sale?

Not all together true. Prior to 1964 all actions were the same length. 1964 and forward there are two different length actions, then magazine boxes will have a spacer block installed for different calibers. There is also a screw spacing difference between short and long actions. You can replace the floor plate with a one piece from Brownell's. Expensive. Call Dave Kiff at Pacific Tool for a new floor plate but will need to be finished.

I don't understand why you can't get a stock from H&S. I believe you will have to special order for a Varmint style stock, prices sre still the same just a waiting period. Just won't find at places like Midway or such. Hunting style stock are readly avaliable from several different mfg's includiing Winchester.

I didn't say I couldn't get a stock from H-S, although they are "out of stock", and I'm sure there is a wait. I'm just not sure what to order as of yet and would really prefer a used stock if possible. I enjoy painting them, kinda personalize them!

Last I checked, H-S only inletted for 'two piece' floor plate/trigger guard assembly. B&C inletts for the 'newer' one piece. H-S is about 16 weeks out, from the factory. Brown Precision makes some for Winchesters. Don't know if they make a "varmint", though. New 'rule' for most anything custom,,,,,,, be prepared to wait!

If your looking for a varmint style stock in glass you have only two choices. McMillian and H-S, about 4 months wait on either. The chances of finding a used one is not very good. Winchesters have never been very popular for building varmint style guns. The 2 piece bottom metal was in production from 1964 until 2007 when Winchester closed the New Haven plant. And is the most popular. The new FN actions are not the same. You can lose the bottom metal and not have any floor plate or buy custom. Winchesters make fine big game hunting rifles (I have 6 of them) but have never been very good at varmint rifles, in part because of the triggers and harder to bed the actions. You have about three choices with your rifle. Have it bedded and shoot it, spring for a new stock or sell it.

Boy the choices kinda such don't they? But, I'm not in a big hurry and it shoot great with factory stock. So far, the rifle is a consistant 1/2 inch@100 rifle and has a very good trigger. Who ever owned it before me must have had the trigger reworked cause it breaks crisp at about 1 1/2 lbs. I'll keep serching and make a few calls, gotta be one out there somewhere.

I have exactly what you do almost- I had my post 64' rebarreled with a heavy bull- I bought a McMillan Kevlar/Boron varmint stock that fit great, I had to do some minor fitting for the floorplate and bedding it was a breeze. I love the stock, fit the barrel perfect (blind luck I think). But, I bought it like 20 years ago and I don't see exactly what I have in thier lineup. Mine is still like new and it's seen a lot of miles hunting chucks and coyotes.
