Winchester M70 feed problem

XTR

F-TR obssessed shooting junkie
I have a friend with a Win M70 in 270Win that has a feeding issue. He bought it used but it looks like a stock newer model M70 with a stagger feed internal mag.

When you start to close the bolt the round being fed will pop up and out or half way out of the action. If it was a DBM I'd say the feed lips needed to be tweaked, and that may be the case here but I've never taken a M70 apart so I don't know if there is anything there to bend.

Is the action a controlled feed mauser type? If it is a mauser type action then the extractor may be broken or bent. Those actions require the cartridges to only be chambered from the magazine...not loaded singley by laying the cartridge in the action and closing the bolt. I can't think of anything a box type internal magazine would such an issue. Have you guys tried closing the bolt slowly and observe the feeding of the cartridge?

Go to a qualified gunsmith.
He can fix the problem or optimize the cycling on your gun.
Thats the best way and the costs are low (1/2 - 1 hour worktime).

No, not a pre-64, this is a newer M70 (I said that above). I thought I explained it above but...

The biggest problem is the second round in the stagger feed mag, and closing slow makes the problem worse as the round has time to swing further out as opposed to rattling into the breach..

All rounds loaded from the mag are a problem, but the second round in the staggered mag is the worst. It loads in the mag to the left side, as the bolt is closed the rear of the round kicks free and to the right and out of the action. You either get what looks like a reversed stovepipe or if you are going slow enough the round will pop completely clear of the action.

I think he is going to be sending it to a smith.
