Winchester Large Pistol Primers

I've been unable to find large pistol magnum primers, but I do have some Winchester LPP. However, the new packaging no longer states that they can be use for standard and magnum pistol loads.

I want to load 44 mag with H110, but am now unsure I can use the Win LPPs. Has anyone heard if these primers may have changed?

A friend of mine was getting high pressures using Win LPs in his 45 acp loads. They were the only primers he could find at the time. Another friend used the Win LPs in his 10mm, but he couldn’t find any. I got them together and they swapped the WLPs and CCIs with each other. They were happy with that. I could be wrong but I think that the WLPs are a magnum primer cause the Winchester powders are ball powders (296=H110). These days when your preferred primer can be hard to find we have to adjust sometimes. You can use magnum primers in a standard (non-magnum) pistol load by slightly reducing the powder charge. But don’t just take my word for it.

Your friend better taper his loads down quickly.
I've gone through over 95,000 of WLP the last 24 years of shooting bullseye and hunting loads. I've also been through at least 5,000 each of Rem., CCI, and Fed. I've never seen an indication of high pressures.
Your friend is either loading really hot or has something very wrong with his pistol.

To the best of my knowledge the only pistol cartridges today that require a Magnum primer are the Limbaugh cartridges. The higher powered cartridges (ie 500 S&W, etc) were originally released now use LRP. The 400 Mag is only a 36 KSI cartridge.

Just because a cartridge says Magnum does not mean that is requires a "Magnum" primer.

My .500 S&W loads call for LRMPs or LRPs depending on the powder. I did some testing using LRPs where LRMPs were called for with the majority of different manufacturers. After testing FPS the difference between the LRPs and LRMPs was negligible.
