Winchester 70 XTR

What is the quality of this rifle? Is this a rifle that Winchester was trying to bring the product back?

These were made in the 70s and 80s if I'm correct. They had a better finish and fit from the previous years post 64. I've owned one and liked it, was a good shooter too after having the barrel bedded.

Dunno what XTR stood for but Winchester started adding “XTR” to several of their models in the late 1970’s. I got a new 9422 in 1978 (not an “XTR”). A couple years later a buddy bought a new 9422 XTR. Only difference I could see was the XTR had a checkered stock.

As stated above, the XTR was a higher level of finish than the standard at a higher price. My father bought a Model 70 XTR in 1974 and it had fancy checkering and a contrasting forend tip. I don't know if it was ebony or not but it looked good. Fit was excellent and the wood was nice, but I don't have a non XTR to compare it to. My Dad never said how much extra it cost. It was very accurate and my Brother-in-Law still hunts with it. I think Winchester marketed the XTR on Model 12 shotguns also. It was considered "extra".
