Winchester 1894 38-55 1903 MFG Value

Hello,

Looking for thoughts on this 1894 at a local shop near me.

Anyone ever come across a tang that has a brass look to it? Wondering if it’s been repaired at some point.

Also wondering if the barrel has been cut back at some point in its life.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated, would this be a rifle you would pick up if the price was right?

Thanks!

Yeah that’s what my gut was telling me. Speaking with the shop owner and it’s on consignment, asking $800.

Thanks for the extra insight!

FWIW, I sold a similar gun, only a round barrel rather than octagon that was original and very nice. Sold it 3 years ago for $2100 and I'm pretty sure I left a few bucks on the table.

That would look good hanging above the fireplace for a conversation piece but it’s been tampered with and the condition is poor. I certainly wouldn’t give them 800.00 for it. Just my opinion.
