Win vrs CCI Primers???

Hello,

I have a load made up that works good for my 223. 26.0gr of H4895, 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tip and Win SR primer.

When I try the CCI primer my velocity's go up 35-38fps average. This might be a dumb question but, does that also mean my preasure's are going up as well? My primers all look good with no sign of high presure.

The accuracy is very close to the same with Winchester being slightly better, I am quite happy with the performance of the Winchester primers, but they are way harder to find around here then the CCI primers??

All so, would the CCI magnum primers maybe be of any advantage for me??

Does deburring the flash hole help??

Oh ya, its a Savage bolt gun.

Thanks.

Kevin.

Generally, yes. If pressure rises, so will velocity. Both the CCI 400 and BR4 are fairly pressure tolerant and I would not expect problems from a known, good load that increases less than 40 fps. It is still a good idea to drop down and rework when changing components.

H4895 is easy to ignite and the CCI 450 would not likely provide any benefit in a small case like .223.

Yes, debur the flash hole with one of the several tools that incorporate a stop, like the Sinclair Gen II. The exception is Lapua brass that does not need deburring but sometimes has a small flake from drilling that must be removed.

Kevin: You did not mention what type rifle you are using. If it's an AR-15, I have experienced a few (2) slam fires when using Winchester primers, and for that reason use them for bolt & single shot only. When Winchester stopped plating their primers, about 10 years ago, they advertised the new plain brass primer as being easier to ignite. Other than that restriction (for me) I find them to be excellent primers, and the slam fires could have been my fault, if I did not seat them below flush in the primer pocket. Several others I know also had AR slam fires with them. I would not think higher velocities mean higher pressures, only that with the H4895 powder and the Winchester primers you are getting a more efficient burn. I also prefer Win. L.R. with H4895 in my 308 & 22-250. That combination works fine for me. And, in my area, during our primer "shortage", Winchester primers always seemed to be available, and at reasonable prices. Steve: After reading your post, I would have to agree that pressure would also have to increase with the increase in velocity, although a more efficient burn may also be a plus. ;)

I got myself a deburring tool and did all my cases,,most seem fine, but there is/was maybe 5-10% where you CAN feel the tool cutting something off in that case that's NOT suposed to be there, and a rather large piece of brass comes out. I found this on Rem,Win and FC cases.
So does it help? Oh ya, some/most factory punched cases need the job done to be consistant.
I'd throw in a primer pocket uniformer tool just to do a proper job of it too.
