I have a Win. 52C circa 1953 that was VERY finicky with the ammunition it would shoot. I pillar/glass bedded it and consistency improved some but never quite lived up to it's reputation. I was about to try re-barreling when I then noticed that in pressing the forend and barrel together lightly the stock felt less than solid. Also noticed when drilling the holes for pillars it seemed a bit soft. In other words, it seemed oil impregnated.
Ordered an semi-inletted Master Class Prone stock, eliminated the magazine well on the action, and viola! It shot most any decent, unsorted, match ammo into the X-ring of an SR-1 target at 100 yards.
Sacrilegious to replace a classic stock? Yes. But oh so satisfying for cheap long range practice! Next, on to mini-Palma matches!
