Wimbledon Cup Question

Guys I have literally spent hours looking for an unambiguous answer to this question. Between High Power, High Power Long Range, F class, FTR.... I am a little confused.

If I wanted to start shooting for an eventual chance at the Wimbledon Cup, (will take years more practice I know) what "class" would I be shooting at NRA matches and what type of Rifle? Caliber, sight, sling/bipod?

Thanks for the help!!!

I may be wrong but I believe only the winner of the 1000 yard high power any/any class at the camp perry nationals get the wimbledon cup.

And it is a Any/Any 20 shot match at 1000 yards and then a 10 shot shoot off with the winners of each relay I think

Does Any/Any mean I could use a Bipod?

Also what calibers are ruling the line right now for this particular class?

NO bipod, just a sling and either irons or scope. the 6s, 7s and maybe a fast 30 are whats hot. 6.5s have faded a bit, as have most of the big 30s.

You better get practicing! ;)

Outstanding.

Any recommendations as to an action? I am currently shooting a BAT action and absolutely love it but I see the Panda is quite popular I'm guessing because of the weight.

Also stock recommendations as well. I have a Manners and love it.

Thomas, the current winner posts here (precisionwelding). It is an any/any sling and irons match with a shootoff.

Any action would work. It has been won with Model 70, R700's 40X and several custom actions. Nesika, Panda, probably a Quad in there somewhere. Your Bat would be just fine.

Find a stock that fits you to shoot prone with a sling and have at it. You do not have to shoot a scope, you can use iron sights- it is an Any sight match.

20 shots with unlimited sighters in 30 min. at 1000yd. Win your relay and your participate in a shootoff with 3 other shooters in your category (any/any) with 3 sighters and 10 shots shots for record and if you tie with someone you will be involved in 'sudden death' shootoff.

Thomas shot his Elisio sp? stocked any rifle. Brux barrel. 7mmRSAUM. Barnard action (pretty sure on this one, the others are a fact) I know this because I am on the Oak Ridge team with him, and didn't get to witness his win as I was in the pits pulling for him. I remember coming out of the pits and finding out he had won, I was very excited for him.

Did you by any chance just finish reading the Carlos Hathcock book?

If he did he would be asking what bullet to use in his 300 Win Mag if he could not get the one Carlos used.

Yea, and I might mention that this guy won the Leach Cup (the oldest trophy awarded in competitive target shooting). 8) Oak Ridge brought it home.

It was cool watching you come off the line asking "who won"?

To the OP and others , I hope I answer all the questions correctly. (Maybe I'll get a gold star ;)) The Wimbledon is shot with any caliber up to .35 as per NRA rules. There are some F-class shooters that shoot this match with bi-pods, but they aren't in the running for the Cup win, only to win in their class. Several years ago, the 6.5x284 was the dominate cartridge but as Mudcat and others have said with better bullets, come better cartridges. That being said, you can use any sights you want, but you have to hold your own rifle, no bi-pods allowed. The Leech cup is the irons only version of the Wimbledon cup and both are very prestigious matches to win. In either match, it's a 1K match and everything you know about reloading and weapons management comes into play, then you hope that the wind Gods favor you that day.
I hope this helps,
Lloyd

There are no F class shooters in the Wimbledon Cup match.

F class has only been invited to shoot at Camp Perry for the last three yrs. We do not participate in the National Championships, we participated in the Great Lakes Regional that was held at the same time. Yes, we were on the line at the other end of Viale shooting at the same time as the match that was the Wimbledon, but we were shooting a different match.

We were invited three yrs ago because there was an international team match between Canada and the US in 2012 and F class was a part of it. (I forget which match)

In 2013 Camp Perry was the week before the F Class US National Championships/World Championships at Raton and was poorly attended

In 2014 we had maybe a dozen F class shooters at the long range matches, held immediately after the Mid Range nationals.

In 2015 I know that the NRA has dropped F class from the Mid Range National Championship program, I don't know the status of whether or not there will be a regional for F class or not. Lack of attendance is not helping the case.

..but no, F class is in no way shape or form associated with the Wimbledon Cup. For the last three yrs we just happened to be in the same place at the same time that it was competed.
